Recordando a Peter Tosh

Un 11 de septiembre de 1987, en un supuesto robo, pusieron fin a la vida de un grande del reggae. Lo recordamos.

Fue un soñador, defensor de los derechos  humanos e ícono del movimiento Rastafari. Formó parte de los primeros años de The Wailers y luego tuvo una exitosa carrera como solita.

La música y la ideología de Peter Tosh quedó registrada en discos como Legalize it (1976), Equal rights (1977) y Mama Africa (1983), entre otros. Fue un impulsor de la música jamaiquina y llevó su bandera por los escenarios del mundo.

En 1978 el artista firmó un contrato con Rolling Stones Records para el lanzamiento de su disco Bush Doctor. El primer corte fue un cover de The Temptations, "Don't Look Back", realizado a dúo con el cantante de los Rolling Stones, Mick Jagger.  De esta forma, su música llegó a un público más amplio.

Su muerte fue un poco dudosa y se habló de un intento de robo a su casa en Kingston. De los asesinos solo se entregó Dennis “Leppo” Lobban, a quien Tosh había ayudado a rehacer su vida tras su salida de la cárcel.

Winston Hubert McIntosh, más conocido como Peter Tosh, fue un músico de reggae, defensor de los derechos humanos y activista pro-legalización del cannabis; que nació el 19 de octubre de 1944 en Westmoreland, un pueblo rural de Jamaica; y murió asesinado en su propia casa en Kingston el 11 de septiembre de 1987.

 Formó parte en sus principios del grupo The Wailers, para luego tener una exitosa carrera como solista, además de ser uno de los más famosos representantes del movimiento Rastafari.

Impulsó y difundió, al igual que Bob Marley, el reggae por todo el mundo y es considerado uno de los mejores artistas de reggae de todos los tiempos.

Su firmeza en la lucha contra el sistema, su rechazo a la utilización bélica de las armas nucleares, la defensa de los derechos humanos y el rechazo público al Apartheid (fue el primer gran compositor que se mostró en contra abiertamente), además de la legalización de la marihuana son unos de los temas fundamentales de la vida y la carrera musical de Peter Tosh.

Crítico con la política de su país y global, llegó a decir: "La verdad ha sido calificada como ilegal. Es peligroso tener la verdad en tu poder. Puedes ser culpable de un delito y condenado a muerte".

"Equal Rights", su éxito de 1977, incluye la conocida frase, repetida años después en muchas protestas "Yo no quiero paz, quiero igualdad y justicia".

Una de sus decisiones más conocidas fue cuando hizo perder a sus productores 78.000 dólares por no tocar en Israel, ya que los israelitas le vendían armas al Apartheid de África en ese tiempo.

He was a dreamer , human rights advocate and icon of the Rastafari movement . He was part of the early years of The Wailers and then had a successful career as soloist .

The music and the ideology of Peter Tosh albums was recorded in Legalize it ( 1976 ) , Equal rights (1977) and Mama Africa ( 1983 ) , among others. It was a driver of Jamaican music and took his flag for world scenarios .
