After graduating from the academy, Miss Hamrick joined American Ballet Theatre’s studio company in 2003. She became part of the corps de ballet within a year.
She had been tipped early on as a rising star — a critic reviewing her performance as the Broom in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, praising her ‘rail-thin body and expressive style’. But since then, she has not progressed beyond the ranks of the corps to become a principal dancer. Some cynics claim that Miss Hamrick might have seen her new-found fame as Jagger’s moll as a timely opportunity to raise her professional profile.
Paul Goode, a New York dance photographer, says: ‘You don’t hang out very publicly on a balcony with Mick Jagger, kissing him, unless you want the pictures to be seen all over the place.
‘Melanie may be an amazing dancer, but sometimes you need something like that take you to the next step,’ he adds drily.

Before Mick, she was engaged to a Cuban dancer called Jose Carreno. They couple were so close to marrying that they had set up a website. It included details of their planned sunset wedding at Mexico’s Royal Playa del Carmen hotel.
Carreno, her boyfriend since 2007, was a principal dancer in the same ballet company. Eighteen years her senior, he had proposed on his birthday in 2011, getting down on one knee in a restaurant having already asked her father for permission.
However, around the time she met Jagger, Carreno moved to California to become artistic director of Ballet San Jose, and appear in a TV contest called Dancing With The Stars. Their relationship had ended.
A ccording to friends, it was a painful break-up — primarily down to their diverging careers and the fact they were working miles apart. But not everyone at the American Ballet Theatre was convinced Jagger was not a factor in the break-up.
‘She stopped wearing her engagement ring around the time she met Mick,’ recalls a member of the theatre’s backstage team. ‘Who knows what happened with her and Jose, but she moved out of their apartment and into a tiny flat on the Upper Westside [in New York].’
Friends of Jagger say: ‘She’s very bright, intelligent, sparky and has her own ideas about how she wants to lead her life. She knows what a great relationship Mick has with all of his children, and can’t wait for him to be a dad again. They are taking the news in their stride.’
The friend added: ‘They’ve seen each other a lot, they like each other a lot, but they still want independent lives. Mick’s relationship with Melanie works for both of them. Melanie is very American and doesn’t want to move to London, even though they’ve been seeing each other regularly over a long period now.
‘Mick likes the arrangement they have and doesn’t want to be in another formal relationship. But the most important thing is how much he loves his children and he has great relations with them. He will support and love this child.’
