En
Chelsea, uno de los barrios más distinguidos de Londres, se ubica
Saatchi Gallery, una galería de arte contemporáneo, un caserón inmenso,
en medio de un predio de césped verde. Ya al llegar , y girar en la
calle de ingreso , mi sorpresa y expectativas se pusieron a tono… tres
lenguas gigantes, en la via publica , adornaban la entrada, donde la
gente , se tomaba fotos , en esta exhibición previa.
"Exhibitionism" , no es cualquier exhibición de los Rolling Stones; es “La exhibición de Los Rolling Stones”, y es que, no es otra cosa más , que una gigantesca puesta en escena de ellos mismos, como productores de una idea , que es compartir un gran pedazo de su historia , y su mundo interno, como banda, como amigos, como artistas , y como productores, de este mega monstruo , que viene rodando hace más de 50 años.
Jagger, Richards, Watts y Wood , se subieron a esta aventura, de montar y producir junto a otros socios, esta muestra de su trabajo, desde su comienzo hasta la actualidad, contando con DHL y Tommy Hilfiger, como auspiciantes para el montaje.
Ante todo , les debo decir dos cosas importantes :
(1) la galería es enorme
(2) las fotos estaban prohibidas!!!
tanto es así , que en cada sala , una persona de seguridad , se encargaba de recordarte, ante la intención mínima de sacar fotos, que te podían retirar de un momento a otro…. Pero no podía fallar, estando tan lejos, a volver con las manos vacías, con lo cual, sepan disculpar la calidad, y cantidad de las fotos.
"Exhibitionism" consta de 9 grandes salones temáticos , y a su vez subdivididos , en pequeñas salas. Así que les contarè salón por salón , de que se trata cada uno de ellos
Salón 1: Ladies & Gentlemans
una gran sala, iluminada de rojo, con un cartel gigante que dice : “Ladies & Gentlemans”, en ambos costados, se proyectaban, en forma dinámica, gráficos de información, a mi derecha tenía un planisferio , que mostraba el movimiento país por país, año por año, de las giras de sus Majestades Satànicas , contabilizando cantidad de: años, giras, conciertos, tours, ciudades, países y el número de audiencia. De 1962 al último concierto en La Habana, totalizan 46.383.259 espectadores , en todo este tiempo.
El grafico a mi izquierda , contabilizaba listaba las canciones, y año por año, la cantidad de: temas, álbumes, horas, minutos y segundos de grabaciones.
Salón 2: Experience
La sala roja , seguía hacia otra totalmente a oscuras, donde una cantidad enorme de pantallas mezcladas , verticales y horizontales, de diferentes pulgadas, y en forma de curva , creaban un muro de proyecciones, de fotos y videos , hacia la siguiente sala, mostrando, desde sus inicios en blanco y negro , hasta hoy en color, los principales momentos de la banda.
Salón 3: Meet the band
Pasando por un tunel , y escuchando las voces de Jagger y Richards, llegamos a una gran foto , que ocupa toda una pared, Bill, Brian, Keith, Mick y Charlie, sentados sobre la acera , con la casa de Edith Grove, en Chelsea de fondo, donde se mudaron todos juntos, comienza la aventura.
La sala continua, hacia un departamento todo mugroso, oloroso y desordenado, pasamos por un dormitorio, una cocina y un living , con un disco de Chuck Berry, girando …..estamos en la recreación de 1963 , de la casa de Chelsea! Los detalles están perfectamente cuidados, y respetados, por el curador de la muestra, Ileen Gallagher.
Otra pequeña sala , se abre al pasar el departamento, un mausoleo de instrumentos , donde encontramos 13 guitarras y dos bajos, en vitrinas fuertemente vigiladas, entre los instrumentos están: "la custom 72" de Keith Richards," la Les Paul 57", pintada por Keith, la primera guitarra que Ted Newman Jones, le preparó a Keith, " una Zemaitis" de Ron y guitarras acústicas de Jagger.
En el centro de esta sala , tenemos una de las mejores novedades de la muestra, para nuestra experiencia, unas pantallas con auriculares, que contienen 8 temas diferentes de los Stones, ¿cuál es la novedad? Que los podemos mixear, y escuchar los canales individualmente, pudiendo escuchar, por ejemplo, las guitarras de Wood y Richards, por separado, en Start me up , o solamente la voz de Mick, en Angie. Imperdible!!!!
Salon 4: Recording:
La sala tiene al entrar , una colección gigante de cartas, notas, agendas de los integrantes, diarios íntimos, y borradores de temas, que no tienen desperdicio. Comentarios de puño y letra de Keith , sobre sus conciertos, como sonaron , o que sucedió. Nos podemos colgar , leyendo horas… además, de cintas de audio de la colección discográfica, y registros varios. El final de esta sala , es la recreación completa, y perfecta del Olympic Studio, donde grabaron Sympathy fot the devil: incluyendo y respetando el orden de los instrumentos , y los mismísimos instrumentos usados en la grabación. En los laterales, y mientras miramos la sala, podemos ver y escuchar, los comentarios de Don Was , sobre producir con los Stones.
Salón 5: Film & Video
Ya en el segundo piso, entrando por un pasillo, pasamos delante de los posters publicitarios, de varias películas de la banda, entre ellos: simpathy for the devil de Jean Luc Godard, Gimme Shelter de David Maysles, Ladies & Gerntlemans de Rollin Binzer, Let´s Spend de night togheter de Hal Ashby, Shine a light de Martin Scorsese, y Crossfire Hurricane de Bret Morgen.
De allí, entramos a una exhibición , como un cine , para sentarnos a ver, tomas de distintas de las películas , comentadas por Martin Scorsese.
La ultima sala, proyecta algunos segundos, de cada uno de los videos originales, a modo de repaso , de toda su videografía completa. Te quedas con ganas de más. "instatisfecho"
Salón 6: Design
Este salón, uno de los más grandes, contiene varias salas, de las más entretenidas que puedas ver, empezando por la primera, donde te recibe, una lengua gigante de los Stones sobre la cual se proyectan varias banderas, paisajes, colores y formas.
En las paredes , vas a poder ver , desde el origen de la lengua , con John Pasche del 71 , hasta el mash ups de lenguas, de Shepard Fairey, para conmemorar los 50 años de la banda.
El gorila gigante , de Walton Ford , para la tapa de GRRRRR ocupa toda una pared.
La siguiente sala es una locura…. Paredes y vitrinas repletas con los trabajos de diseño, y plantillas originales de tapas de vinilos, diferentes versiones de tapas, posters de las giras, material publicitario para las disquerías, construcciones de las diferentes maquetas en escala , de varias giras mundiales, arte y pintura de Andy Warhol, entre otros, trabajando con los Stones.
Salón 7: Style
Otra increíble creación de la exhibición . Exhibitionism armo para el público , 3 pasarelas gigantes , con maniquíes que visten diferentes vestuarios originales , del vestidor de la banda. Dividido en tres grandes momentos: comenzando por KINGS ROAD, trabajo de Andrew Loog Oldham, donde se ven sus principales trajes , que usaban para la calle, y el escenario por igual, del 62 al 69, GLAM desde la fecha del Hyde Park, hasta la Gira Stell Wheels, y por ultimo SPECTACLE que es la fase actual, donde diferentes diseñadores, como Marc Jacobs, Jean Paul Gaultier, Gucci, Gianni Versace, Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, L´wren Scott y Tommy Hilfiger , visten a la banda. Tommy hace los comentatios sobre esta última parte de la exhibición.
El final de la sala tiene una joyita: una pasarela , con los principales trajes que uso Jagger , para interpretar Sympathy for the devil en vivo.
Salón 8: Rare
Esta sala , es un popurrí de elementos de los stones, que ellos mismos atesoraron para si.
Elementos de giras, instrumentos, reliquias, fotos, videos y objetos en general. Entre los destacables están: el grabador, que utilizo Keith, para grabar Street Fighting man , con el sonido , que él quería lograr de sus guitarras crudas, las listas de temas en sus tonos , que pinta Ronnie en el back, antes de cada concierto , y lo mejor: una recreación de la tapa de get yer ya ya´s , con un burro y todo!!!!
La sala sigue con un momento dedicado a los colaboradores de la banda, listando entre ellos ( y comentados por las mismísimas voces de Charlie, Ronnie, Keith y Mick) desde Ian Stewart, pasando por todos sus tecladistas y coristas, hasta Darryl Jones.
Salón 9: Performance
En esta sala, y ya sabiendo que erala ultima me preocupe, me distrajo enseguida un audio de fondo….mientras miraba esta recreación del backstage de la banda (el “santuario” según palabras de Keith), se escuchaba, y no hay dudas al respecto, "el público argentino" , coreando a los stones!! Este sala , recrea con todos sus elementos , como viven los stones los momentos previos , de salir al escenario, incluyendo la sala de maquillaje, iluminación y los dos racks , con las guitarras de Keith y Ronnie al alcance de mi mano… al avanzar te entregan unos lentes 3D, la cosa se pone emocionante, te hacen pasar a un sala, que te hace sentir que estas en un estadio, un campo, y delante tuyo…un escenario....cuando queres reaccionar….el riff de satisfaction…..empieza una proyección en 3D, y tamaño real de los stones , tocando en el último concierto de Hyde Park, piel de gallina y lágrimas.
En resumen: 4hs de mucha mucha emoción. Al terminar (you can´t always get what you want) , costaba aceptar que la exhibición tenia fin, pero para apalear el sentimiento negativo, nada mejor que la pasada obligatoria , por el store de merchandising. Imaginen que además de un metegol pueden llevarse un poster de tumbling dice , firmado por Mick en 500 libras…..
Espero puedan verla ustedes tambien, y confirmen a Buenos Aires , como una de las 11 ciudades , que visitará Exhibitionism.
"Exhibitionism", We visited the exhibition! . felt the emotion through this story.
"Exhibitionism" is not just any exhibition of the Rolling Stones; is "The exhibition of The Rolling Stones", and that is a giant staging about themselves as producers of the idea, which is to share a big piece of its history, and its inner world , as a band, as friends, as artists, and producers of this mega monster, rolling down over 50 years ago.
Jagger, Richards, Watts and Wood got into this adventure, assemble and produce with other partners, this exhibition of his work, from the beginning to the present, with DHL and Tommy Hilfiger, as sponsors for assembly.
First of all, I must say two important things:
(1) the gallery is huge
(2) take photos is forbidden !!!,
so much so that in each room, a security person was responsible for reminding it, with any intention of taking photos, you could left out at any moment .... But I couldn´t fail you, being so far and come back with my empty hands, which, apologize quality and quantity of photos.
"Exhibitionism" consists of 9 large themed lounges, and in turn subdivided into smaller rooms. So let me tell you what is it about room by room.
Room 1: Ladies & Gentlemans
a big room, illuminated in red, with a giant sign that says: "Ladies & Gentlemans" on both sides, projected, dynamically, information graphics, to my right had a world map, showing the country move by country , year by year, the tours of their Majesties satanic, counting amount of: years, tours, concerts, tours, cities, countries and the number of audience. From 1962 to last concert in Havana, totaling 46,383,259 viewers, in all this time.
The chart on my left, counted it listed the songs, and year by year the number of: subjects, albums, hours, minutes and seconds of recordings.
Hall 2: Experience
The red room continue to another one completely in darkness, where a huge amount of mixed, vertical and horizontal screens, different inches and shaped curve, creating a wall of projections, photos and videos, into the next room, showing the main moments of the band from beginning in black and white until today in color.
Hall 3: Meet the band
Going through a tunnel and listening to the voices of Jagger and Richards, we arrived at a large photo, which occupies an entire wall, Bill, Brian, Keith, Mick and Charlie, seated on the sidewalk, the house of Edith Grove, Chelsea background, where they moved together, the adventure begins.
Room continuous to an apartment all filthy, smelly and messy, we passed a bedroom, a kitchen and a living room, with a rolling record of Chuck Berry, We are in 1963 Chelsea´s house recreation! Details are perfectly maintained and respected by the curator, Ileen Gallagher.
Another small room opens to pass the department, a mausoleum of instruments, which are 13 guitars and two bass in heavily guarded display cases, among the instruments are Keith Richard´s "custom ´72", "Les Paul 57" painted by Keith, Ted Newman Jones´s first guitar prepared to Keith, a Ron Wood´s "Zemaitis" and Jagger´s acoustic guitars.
In the center of this room, we have one of the best exhibition´s neveltys for our experience, some screens with headphones, containing 8 different Rolling sontes songs, what´s the new? We can mix it and listen channels individually, for example, and be able to hear Wood and Richard´s guitars separately on Start me up, or only the voice of Mick, Angie. Safety pin!!!!
Salon 4: Recording:
The room is entered a giant collection of letters, notes, agendas of the members, diaries, and drafts of issues that have no waste. Keith´s handwriting comments, their concerts, as they sounded, or whats happened. We can stay there reading for hours; also audiotapes of the record collection, and several records. The end of this room is a complete and perfect recreation of the Olympic Studio where they recorded Sympathy fot the devil: including and respecting the order of the instruments, and selfsame instruments used in the recording. On the sides, and while we looked at the room, we can see and hear Don Was comments about produce with the Stones.
Room 5: Film & Video
Already on the second floor, entering through a corridor, we pass in front of the advertising posters of several films of the band, including: Sympathy for the devil of Jean-Luc Godard, Gimme Shelter David Maysles, Ladies & Gerntlemans Rollin Binzer, Let's Spend of night togheter Hal Ashby, Shine a light of Martin Scorsese, and Crossfire Hurricane Bret Morgen.
From there, we went to a show, like a movie theater, to sit and watch, take different films, commented by Martin Scorsese.
The last room projected a few seconds of each original video, as a complete videography review. You keep wanting more.
Room 6: Design
This room, one of the biggest, contains several rooms of the most entertaining you can see, starting with the first where you get a giant tongue of the Stones on which various flags, landscapes, colors and shapes are projected.
On the walls, you can see, from the tongue origins, with John Pasche 71, to Shepard Fairey´s tongue mash ups, to commemorate 50 years of the band.
The Walton Ford´s giant gorilla from GRRRRR LP cover occupies an entire wall.
The next room is madness .... Walls and display cases filled with design work, original templates caps vinyl, different cover´s versions, posters touring, advertising material for record stores, several world tours making scale model, Andy Warhol´s art and painting, among others, working with the Stones.
Room 7: Style
Another amazing creation of the exhibition. Exhibitionism worked to the public 3 giant fashion show, with mannequins wearing different original costumes from band dressing room. Divided in three great moments: starting KINGS ROAD, work of Andrew Loog Oldham, where are their main costumes, which they used for street and stage alike, from 62 to 69, GLAM from Hyde Park date, to Steel Wheels Tour, and finally SPECTACLE is the current phase, where different designers such as Marc Jacobs, Jean Paul Gaultier, Gucci, Gianni Versace, Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, L'wren Scott and Tommy Hilfiger, dress the band. Tommy makes Comments on this last part of the exhibition.
The end of the room is a little gem: a fashion show with major outfits that use Jagger to interpret Sympathy for the devil live.
Room 8: Rare
This room is a potpourri of elements of stones, that they treasure.
tours elements, instruments, relics, photos, videos and objects in general. Among the highlights are: the recorder that Keith use to record Street Fighting Man, with the sound that he wanted to achieve their raw guitars, song´s lists in their tones, painted by Ronnie in the backstage before each concert, and the best one: a get yer ya's cover recreation with a donkey and all that!!!!
The room continues with a moment dedicated to the collaborators of the band, listing among them (and commented by the very voice of Charlie, Ronnie, Keith and Mick) from Ian Stewart, going through all their keyboardists and singers to Darryl Jones.
Room 9: Performance
In this room, and knowing that was last one, I worry, immediately distracted me a background audio ... .while watching this recreation of the backstage of the band (the "sanctuary" in Keith´s words), was heard, and no doubt about, "the Argentine public," chanting the stones !! This room recreates with all its elements, how live the stones previous times to stage, including the makeup room, lighting and the two racks, with Keith and Ronnie´s guitars within reach of my hand ... moving foward they deliver you a 3D glasses, it gets exciting, make you move to a room that makes you feel you are in a stadium, a field, and in front of you ... a stage .... when you want to react ... .satisfaction´s riff ... ..3D projection starts in Stone´s real size, playing the last concert of Hyde Park, goosebumps and tears.
In summary: 4hs much much emotion. At the end (you can't always get what you want), hard to accept that the exhibition had an end, but to beat the negative sentiment, nothing better than last compulsory for the store merchandising. Imagine that besides a foosball , you can buy a Tumbling Dice poster signed by Mick at 500 lbs ... ..
I hope you can see it too, and confirm Buenos Aires as one of the 11 cities that Exhibitionism visit.
