Era un banquete codiciado por la industria editorial y ya en 1983, una firma británica le traspasó a Mick Jagger un millón de libras para que escribiera su autobiografía.
El entusiasmo, sin embargo, duró hasta que los editores leyeron el texto. Contrario a la leyenda consensuada del genio indomable, del demonio lascivo, rebelde y sicotrópico, el mamotreto que llegó era de lo más convencional y aburrido. Jagger, rechazado, tuvo que devolver hasta el último peso.
Con ese episodio, el autor británico Philip Norman (71 años) justifica por qué dedicar cerca de 600 páginas a un cantante que en 50 años de carrera acumula millares de perfiles periodísticos y artículos de tabloides. En lugar de todo eso, Norman propone una biografía de ambiciones definitivas, titulada solamente como Mick Jagger.
La primera traducción al castellano de Mick Jagger aparece este 11 de junio y algunas semanas después desembarca en Chile a través de la editorial Anagrama. Se trata de la misma etiqueta que trajo a los escaparates locales la biografía John Lennon -también escrita por Norman- y que completa así el tándem soñado por el autor. Eso, porque una de las tesis más polémicas del británico -reafirmadas en éste, su último libro- tiene que ver con postular a Lennon y Jagger como parte de una misma épica, como los dos líderes responsables de legar todo lo que se espera de una estrella de rock desde los años 60 en adelante.
Por supuesto, no es una biografía autorizada. “ Sir Mick sólo habla con escritores y periodistas si tiene algo que vender. Y en tales casos, el emocionado y tembloroso escritorcillo (...) tiene que conformarse con los lugares comunes de siempre. (Jagger) no ve qué beneficios le reporta contar la verdad (...). Los millones se encuentran en la leyenda. Y los millones son siempre lo primero”, deja en claro el autor en el libro.
No quiere decir que Norman haya escrito alejado de “sus satánicas majestades”. En 1965 fue su primer encuentro con Jagger -una entrevista apenas anecdótica- mientras que en 1982, partió de gira con The Rolling Stones por Estados Unidos. Según recuerda, lo primero que hizo el vocalista fue corregirle un detalle microscópico que Norman recogió para la biografía de The Beatles Shout! (1982) sobre el mánager Allen Klein. “Para que luego vaya por ahí diciendo que de su asombrosa trayectoria musical no recuerda nada de nada”, escribe en la biografía. Ese año, Norman también fue rechazado como “escritor fantasma” de la fracasada autobiografía del cantante; se sacaría el desaire en 1993, pintando de negro la historia del grupo en su libro The Stones.
CABALLERO SIN MEMORIA
La desmemoria, según Norman, es la excusa y mentira de Sir Mick para no volver sobre sus fracasos cinematográficos, su tibia carrera solista o los episodios más sórdidos de su vida, que sobran. Como su matrimonio de 1971 en Saint Tropez con Bianca Jagger, su primera esposa, descrito en profundidad como un circo de celebridades entre el cual aguardaban los padres de Jagger, abandonados y esperando para entregarle a su hijo su regalo de matrimonio.
Norman también se detiene en las drogas, particularmente en “las redadas de Redlands”: la operación coordinada de las policías secretas de Estados Unidos e Inglaterra que terminaron, eventualmente, con el músico tras las rejas y expuesto al escarnio global. Después de eso, sus desvaríos sintéticos pasaron a ser más leyenda que hábito. “Aunque es cierto que Mick probaba todo lo que ponían en su mano, con las drogas, la moderación era su lema, lo era en realidad con todo excepto la vanidad”, se afirma en las páginas de Mick Jagger.
Por otra parte, el mito del Casanova moderno es alimentado con menciones a la convivencia triple que sostuvo junto a David Bowie y su esposa Angie Barnett; o con infidelidades de las que incluso su esposa Bianca -resignada a compartirlo- nunca se enteró. Está también “el retiro” a la mansión de Andy Warhol en Montauk, donde los vecinos reportan escuadrones de jovencitas (“algunas iban desnudas y con el vello púbico teñido de verde”) colándose a los ensayos. O más recientemente, desde 1997, su relación clandestina con Angelina Jolie, retratada como “la primera de sus novias que lo trató como la mierda”.
Norman no duda, sin embargo, en destacar a Jerry Hall como la pareja más importante del cantante, y su divorcio en 1999, como el episodio que desnudó a Jagger frente a sus acólitos: “Se aprestó a dar razón a todas las leyendas sobre su arrogancia, egoísmo y tacañería, y tras decepcionar a un cuarto de millón de miembros de la generación del boom por ahorrarse unos impuestos, ahora intentó defraudar a quien había sido superlativa esposa durante ocho años y era madre de cuatro de sus hijos”.
