Cuando Paul Jones rechazó una oportunidad de cantar en una banda recién formada, no tenía ni idea de que un día se convertiría en los Rolling Stones. Pero el músico no se arrepiente ...

Así es como la historia musical puede depender de una sola decisión, llegado  a lo que ahora parece un motivo de risa. En 1962, un talentoso músico de 20 años de edad llamado Brian Jones pidió al cantante Paul Jones (sin relación) si quería unirse a una banda que estaba formando. Brian tenía planes de mudarse a Londres desde su ciudad natal de Cheltenham para tener una oportunidad por el gran momento.

Paul, entonces estudiante en Oxford, se negó. Él ya había pedido a Brian para reunirse con su propio grupo - pero Brian con frialdad respondió que no tenia deseo de ser parte de una banda a menos que él sería su líder.

"Yo no dije que no por despecho," Paul Jones dijo. "Yo simplemente no podía ver "un futuro económico" para nosotros. Y yo acababa una audición para ser un cantante con una banda de baile. "Sonríe con tristeza en la memoria.  Eso no era nada parecido a la altura de mi ambición, pero pensé que podría ser un camino en el negocio de la música ".

Poco después, por supuesto, Brian Jones conectó con Mick Jagger y Keith Richards, y nacieron los Rolling Stones.

A primera vista, parece una gran oportunidad perdida - pero Paul Jones lo ve de otra manera. "Podemos reírnos ahora", dice, "porque, en teoría, podría haber sido Mick Jagger. Pero no habría sido Mick Jagger. Esto es lo que habría sucedido. Brian y yo habriamos  tenido una banda. Mick y Keith habrían comenzado otra banda. Y esa banda se habría convertido en los Rolling Stones ".

Es como si Paul Jones se quedó atrás en la historia. Se convirtió en cantante de Manfred Mann, uno de la media docena de grupos británicos más exitosos de la década de 1960, y se quedó con ellos durante más de dos años, cantando éxitos como Doo Wah Diddy, Oh No Not My Baby and Pretty Flamingo.

Paul Jones: the man who could have been in the Rolling Stones

When Paul Jones turned down an opportunity to sing in a newly formed band, he had no idea it would one day become the Rolling Stones. But the musician has no regrets...

Here’s how musical history can hinge on a single decision, arrived at for what now looks like a laughable reason. In 1962, a talented 20 year old musician named Brian Jones asked singer Paul Jones (no relation) if he would join a band he was forming. Brian had plans to move to London from his home town of Cheltenham to have a crack at the big time.

Paul, then an undergraduate at Oxford, declined. He had already asked Brian to join his own group – but Brian had stiffly replied that he had no wish to be part of a band unless he was its leader.

“I didn’t say no out of spite,” Paul Jones says now. “I simply couldn’t see an economic future for us. And I’d just auditioned to be a singer with a dance band. In Slough.” He smiles ruefully at the memory. “Slough! That wasn’t anything like the height of my ambition, but I thought it could be a way into the music business.”

Soon afterwards, of course, Brian Jones hooked up with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, and the Rolling Stones were born.

At first glance, it seems a huge missed opportunity – but Paul Jones sees it differently. “We can laugh now,” he says, “because in theory I could have been Mick Jagger. But I wouldn’t have been Mick Jagger. This is what would have happened. Brian and I would have had a band. Mick and Keith would have started another band. And that band would have become the Rolling Stones.”

It’s not as if Paul Jones got left behind by history. He became lead singer with Manfred Mann, one of the half-dozen most successful British groups of the 1960s, and stayed with them for over two years, singing on such hits as Doo Wah Diddy, Oh No Not My Baby and Pretty Flamingo.

As a solo artist he enjoyed chart success with High Time and I’ve Been a Bad Boy.
