Jerry Hall «Lo de Mick Jagger fue un flechazo»

Me dicen que Jerry Hall viene a Madrid, como embajadora de Las Rozas y La Roca Village, y que va a estar en la campaña dedicada a los accesorios del outlet. Me voy para allá como una flecha. Antes de que aparezca, me pregunto si será tan impactante como en las campañas de publicidad. Cuando se abre la puerta y me tiende la mano, apenas tengo unos instantes para repasar su rostro, enmarcado en su característica melena rubia y ondulada. Los ojos transparentes, la sonrisa infinita y escarlata de siempre, las arrugas propias del paso del tiempo. ¡Es cierto que no se pincha bótox ni se ha hecho cirugía! ¡Tal vez ahí también se nota que su coeficiente intelectual es superior al de la media! Aunque, claro, la genética ayuda a evitarse algunos errores. Gracias a la suya, a su delgadez y a su altura, ha sido top model, presentadora, actriz y musa de artistas. Lo de Mick Jagger, sino fuera porque es el padre de sus cuatro hijos, sería casi lo de menos…Y eso que,  pese a sus infidelidades y excesos, reconoce que lo pasaron  «muy, muy bien».

–Es un privilegio tener a Jerry Hall en Madrid, pero ¿la gente como usted compra en outlets?

–¡Oh, sí! Nunca compro nada a no ser que tenga descuento. Además, no me apetece comprar algo en el minuto que sale a la venta, porque no quiero llevar puesto algo que alguien más lleva en ese momento. Así que hay veces que compro algo y lo guardo durante un año, hasta que nadie más lo lleva y entonces me lo pongo.

–Lo decía por esa imagen de las grandes modelos siempre relacionada con caprichos, glamour y cosas caras…

–Bueno, es que aquí tienen tiendas magníficas y están mis diseñadores favoritos. Cuando tú vas a América a un centro comercial de tiendas de marca con descuentos, es como un gran almacén con muchos percheros que tienes que revisar. Aquí  hay boutiques independientes y los mejores diseñadores: Loewe, Michael Kors… Me he comprado el kimono más bonito, un «cheongsam» de David Tang y ya sabes los caros que son cuando los compras en una tienda de Londres. La diferencia es increíble, así que merece la pena viajar hasta aquí para pasar el día entero de compras, que me encanta.

–¿Cómo llega una jovencita de una familia humilde de Texas a convertirse en modelo internacional?

–Fue como un cuento de hadas. Terminé el instituto un año antes, porque saqué todo sobresalientes. Y me fui a París. Nunca había volado en avión, pero mi madre, con quien solía ver esas películas antiguas como «Atrapa a un ladrón», que siempre se desarrollan en La Riviera, me dijo: «Tienes que ir a la Riviera».  Así que fui. Tenía una mochila, un billete para Interrail y la maravillosa ropa que me había hecho ella copiando los modelos del catálogo de «Frederick’s of Hollywood». ¡Todas tenían algo de flecos..! Y allí, en mi primer día en la playa, un hombre se acercó y me preguntó: «¿Te gustaría ser modelo?» Y yo dije: «Sí» . Y se convirtió en mi agente. Tuve mucha suerte. 

–Y al poco tiempo la fotografió Helmut Newton y enseguida  se convirtió en portada de «Vogue» y top model internacional. Más o menos por entonces conoció a Bryan Ferry, ¿no? 

–Sí, y nos comprometimos. Él me contrató para hacer la portada de su disco. En aquella época había  grandes portadas, que eran preciosas, como obras de arte. A mí me encantaba su música… ¡Y era tan guapo! Estuvimos comprometidos durante dos años.

–Pero debía ser menos sexy que Mick Jagger, ¿no? (Jerry abandonó a Ferry por Jagger y Jagger dejó a su entonces mujer, Bianca, por ella).

–Bueno, ya sabes, fue un «coup de foudre» (flechazo). ¿Qué puedes decir? ¡Me hizo perder la cabeza!

–Hoy  (el martes, cuando hicimos la entrevista) es el 50 aniversario del inicio de los Rolling Stones…

–¿Hoy? ¿50 años? ¡Vaya! Bueno, es una señal. Tienen mucho talento, son unos genios de la música. Creo que su música siempre será popular y que siempre gustará porque es muy buena.

–¿Y su vida con Mick qué tal fue?

–Estuvimos 23 años juntos, cuatro niños… Lo pasamos muy, muy bien; pero era bastante típico. No es el tipo de hombre con el que querría que salieran mis hijas, así que fue bastante difícil. Ahora tengo un novio nuevo desde hace dos años. Es australiano, Warwick Hemsley. Es muy dulce, encantador y fiel, lo que es realmente muy agradable, muy relajante.

–¿Entonces ahora está viviendo en paz?

–Sí. Yo creo que los cincuenta  son mi mejor momento. Siento que he conseguido lo típico: criar hijos, tener una carrera larga y satisfactoria… Ahora tan sólo me relajo y lo paso bien. Trabajo, pero sólo hago lo que quiero hacer. Y me siento mucho más relajada por dentro, para poder disfrutar de mí misma. Sé exactamente lo que quiero en esta vida y estoy en un momento inmejorable.

–La edad da estabilidad, pero también dicen que con el tiempo, mientras que las mujeres feas mejoran, las bellas sólo pueden empeorar…

–No sé. Mi madre tiene 88 años y aún está guapa. Es una mujer maravillosa y elegante. Pero, ¿sabes? Lo bueno de estar en los 50 es que tu vista falla y no puedes verte las arrugas, así que no te importan demasiado. Es bastante agradable. No hay nada que te importe mucho.

–Hablemos de su relación con los artistas, ¿cómo era Lucien Freud?  

–¡Oh, él era maravilloso!

–¿Es cierto que estaba loco por usted?

–Bueno, no sé... Se crea una relación muy íntima con un pintor cuando te retrata, verdaderamente te llegas a conocer. Fue maravilloso trabajar con él. Realmente disfruté toda la experiencia.

–Pero vendió el cuadro en el que la pintó cuando estaba embarazada de ocho meses…

–Sí. Vendí algunos cuadros porque se habían vuelto demasiado valiosos. No quería tener que preocuparme por ellos. Cuando eres joven acumulas cosas como para hacer tu nido y después, cuando te haces mayor, simplemente las cosas dejan de importarte. Ahora me encanta ir de viaje, pasarlo bien, comprar, que me den masajes, comer buena comida.

–Pero también ha conservado algún cuadro valioso. Uno de Warhol, por ejemplo, ¿no?

–Sí. Lo iba a vender también, pero mis hijas intervinieron.

–¿Es su cuadro favorito?

–Creo que sí. Adoraba a Warhol, fuimos muy buenos amigos. Él me pintó en seis cuadros. Era parte de mi vida cuando vivía en Nueva York. Nos vimos dos o tres veces a la semana durante doce años. Tuvimos una buena relación durante mucho tiempo. Me encantaba su trabajo. Siempre me han gustado los artistas, siempre he sido amiga de ellos. Están locos, me gusta eso, son bastante excéntricos.

–¿Y ahora compra arte?

–Sí, me encanta Tracey Emin, creo que es muy buena. Grayson Perry,  también es estupendo.

–Y no son tan caros como Lucian Freud…

–Sí, lo sé, lo sé… Y siempre me ha gustado Salvador Dalí. Creo que es maravilloso. Le conocí cuando estuve en París. Tenía 16 años. Y le vi de nuevo cuando tenía  19, en Nueva York. Y a su esposa, que era encantadora… Un hombre muy interesante. Me encanta su trabajo, pero es muy caro. Sólo tengo algunas láminas, son muy bonitas.

–Pero si quisiera, podría permitírselo ¿no?

–¡Oh no! ¡Pediría un descuento!

–¡Ha hecho tantas cosas! ¿Qué le queda por vivir o por soñar?

–Bueno, creo que ahora mismo mi vida es tan maravillosa que no tengo que pensar sobre el pasado ni el futuro. Estoy disfrutando mucho de mí misma. La vida es buena. Eso sí, espero volver de vacaciones a España, me encanta Madrid, Sevilla es preciosa…

Ha sido Mrs. Robinson en «El graduado» y ha representado «Los monólogos de la vagina», entre infinidad de papeles; pero quizá el mejor de todos es el de madre de cuatro hijos, dos chicas modelos y dos chicos, uno actor y otro en el mundo de la  música: «Maravillosos y creativos».

Personal e intransferible

Cuando llego a las Rozas Village, para encontrarme con Jerry Hall, lleva varias horas atendiendo a periodistas. Me han concedido el privilegio de encontrarme a solas con ella, así que no me importa esperar a que coma algo. «Es su hora de cenar», me dice alguien de su equipo. Me retiro a la salita contigua y mientras repaso mi cuestionario me aseguran que es encantadora. «Qué bien, porque me gustaría preguntarle por varias cosas de su libro “My life in pictures” bastante comprometidas». « Y, ¿qué le quieres preguntar?». «Me gustaría que  comentara cómo superó aquellos rumores de que Mick le había robado la novia 

–Carla Bruni– a Eric Clapton». El asistente de Jerry abandona la sala. Me temo lo peor. Trae un mensaje: «Jerry dice que nada de sexo, drogas y rock’nroll».

-Yes. I sold some pictures because he had become too valuable. I did not want to worry about them. When you're young you accumulate things to make your nest and then when you get older, things simply cease to care. Now I love to travel, have fun, buy, give me massages, eating good food.

Yes. I was going to sell well, but my daughters were involved.

- Is your favorite picture?

-I think so. Warhol loved, we were very good friends. He painted six pictures. It was part of my life when I lived in New York. We saw two or three times a week for twelve years. We had a good relationship for a long time. I loved his work. I've always loved artists, I've always been friends with them.They're crazy, I like that, are quite eccentric.

- And now buy art?

Yes, I love Tracey Emin, I think is very good. Grayson Perry, is also great.

And not as expensive as Lucian Freud ...

Yes, I know, I know ... And I've always liked Salvador Dali. I think it's wonderful. I met him when I was in Paris. He was 16.And I saw him again when he was 19, in New York. And his wife, who was lovely ...
