Keith Richards “Lo difícil de los Rolling Stones es reunirlos”

Los Rolling Stones viven su dualidad: son cuatro leyendas, íconos, figuras de cera que representan un capítulo fundamental en la historia del rock n’ roll. Pero también son seres humanos de palpitantes corazones que no necesitan andar de gira constantemente ni morder el polvo de la industria para llamar la atención.

Su ausencia en la ceremonia de clausura de los Juegos Olímpicos generó más ansiedad. Para levantar una polvareda les bastó que dijeran a través de sus cuentas de Twitter que estaban compartiendo en el estudio. Luego detuvieron el mundo por unos instantes cuando anunciaron que darían una serie de conciertos en Londres y Nueva York y el lanzamiento del documental Crossfire Hurricane.

A propósito de Grrr!, el disco recopilatorio que lanzaron  para celebrar 50 años de carrera, los músicos, por separado, ofrecieron extensas entrevistas, cuyo contenido fue cedido  por la compañía Universal Music. Participaron Mick Jagger y Ron Wood, pero fue Keith Richards quien dio las mejores respuestas.

–¿Cómo fue la dinámica al volver a juntarse en el studio?

—Creo que buena de la energía se produjo porque no habíamos trabajo juntos desde hacía tiempo. Vamos a ser claros: fueron 5 años de pausa. ¡ya estaba poniéndome ansioso! Mick y yo logramos un par de canciones. “Doom and Gloom” fue la primera. Luego llegó “One More Shot”. Fue muy interesante para mí porque los Stones nunca habían terminado una pista tan rápido. Lo difícil de los Rolling Stones es reunirlos. Estar juntos en una misma habitación, incluso después de tantos años, a mí produce una sensación increíble. Puedes sentir que hay algo más allí presente, no importa el nombre que tenga.

—¿Por qué cree que los Stones han durado tanto?

—Porque somos muy buenos y amamos genuinamente lo que hacemos. No tocamos por más nada que no sea nosotros mismos. No nos molesta que nos paguen, ¿a quién le molesta?, pero no es la fuerza que mueve a la banda. A veces me pregunto: ‘Keith, ¿qué es lo realmente quieres hacer? Quizá quedarme en casa sentado, pintando o escribiendo’, pero hay un magnetismo por el que digo: ‘No, lo que realmente quiero hacer es tocar con Charlie, Mick y Ronnie”.

—¿Cuál es el aporte de cada integrante del grupo en la música que hacen?

—Es muy difícil de explicarlo o ponerlo en palabras porque nosotros no lo sabemos. Lo único que sé es que entramos en una habitación con un par de micrófonos e instrumentos, y hay algo interesante que empieza a ocurrir.

—Si pudiera enviarle un mensaje al Keith Richards de 20 años de edad, ¿qué le diría?

—¡No lo hagas de Nuevo!

—¿Existe alguna parte de los Rolling Stones qué haya sido malinterpretada?

—Creo que probablemente una de las fortalezas de esta banda es que es totalmente comprensible. No hay malos entendidos. Todos saben quiénes somos. Hay un grupo de tipos muy talentosos –habla de Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts y Ron Wood– con los que me encontré. Es como un gran equipo de futbol. Encuentras a la gente adecuada y los milagros ocurren. Somos mucho más grandes en conjunto de lo que podríamos ser por separado.

—¿Cree que existe algún otro show de rock n’ roll que se le acerque a los Stones?

—He visto a Little Richard y Bo Diddly y puedo decir: ¡eso es rock n’ roll, baby! Fui privilegiado por trabajar con esos tipos. Creo que todos los músicos, incluso Mozart, sueñan con ser esos ídolos que existieron antes de ellos. Tiene algo de imitación, en cierta forma. Si a través de los años los superas o te haces más famoso, y sigues admirando a alguien como Chuck Berry en su estado primario, significa que sigues en la onda del rock n’ roll.

—¿A sus hijos les resultó difícil rebelarse porque el padre era Keith Richards?

—¡Contra qué se tienen que rebelar: mira quien es papá! En casa no me ven como un rebelde: soy el papá. Yo dicto la ley e impongo respeto. Les enseño a mis hijos lo mismo que me enseñaron: a tomar a todos como lo que son y no ser tan maleducados. Obviamente olvidé algunas de las reglas en el camino.

—Se ha dicho que no hay nada más adictivo que el aplauso de 80.000 personas…

—Lo único superior a eso es escuchar a 100.000. Tú estas ahí sin saber cuántos son. Yo me he enganchado en muchas cosas una y otra vez, pero de lo único que no puedo escaparme y abandonarlo es tocar con los Rolling Stones.

—¿Qué puede esperar el público de los conciertos de noviembre?

—Un gran escenario y un gran show. Estamos trabajando duro y nos estamos divirtiendo mucho. La banda suena bien en los ensayos y estamos ansiosos de mostrarle eso al público.

- How was the dynamic at getting back together in the studio?

- Is there any part of the Rolling Stones has been misinterpreted?

-I think probably one of the strengths of this band is that it's completely understandable. No misunderstanding. Everyone knows who we are. There is a very talented group of guys, talking about Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts and Ron Wood, with whom I met. It's like a great football team. You find the right people and miracles happen. We are much bigger together than we could be alone.

- Do you think there is another show of rock n 'roll that comes close to the Stones?

-I saw Little Richard and Bo Diddly and I can say that's rock n 'roll, baby! I was privileged to work with these guys. I think all musicians, including Mozart, dream of being those idols that existed before them. It has something to imitate, in a way. If through the years exceed or you become more famous, and still admire someone like Chuck Berry in its primary state, meaning you're still on the wave of rock n 'roll.

- Do your children found it difficult to rebel because the father was Keith Richards?

- Against which have to rebel: look who's Dad! At home do not see me as a rebel: I am the father. I dictate the law and impose respect. I teach my children what they taught me: to take everyone as they are and not be so rude. Obviously forgot some of the rules of the road.

-A large stage and a great show. We are working hard and we're having so much fun. The band sounds good in testing and we are eager to show that to the public.
