David Bailey, fotógrafo británico especializado en moda, abre su mayor retrospectiva en la National Portrait Gallery, con 300 retratos de famosos como la modelo Kate Moss, Mick Jagger o el actor Jack Nicholson.
A todo color, en tonos sepia y sobre todo en blanco y negro, ha retratado el objetivo de la cámara de David Bailey durante cinco décadas a personalidades del mundo de la moda, la música y el arte, pero también el rostro más desfavorecido de la sociedad en lugares remotos del planeta.
La colección de instantáneas provocadoras e imaginativas han sido escogidas por el propio fotógrafo, de 76 años, de su voluminoso archivo para la exposición "Bailey's Stardust", presentada hoy y que podrá verse en el Museo de Londres, desde mañana y hasta el próximo 1 de junio.
La entrada a la muestra la preside un gran retrato en blanco y negro de la veterana modelo británica Kate Moss, considerada una de sus musas, aunque el artista también presenta a la que fue su primera novia, la también modelo Jean Shrimpton, en una fotografía a todo color tomada a finales de los años 60 con una Polaroid.
La moda es uno de los temas centrales de las instantáneas de David Bailey, el cual empezó su carrera a finales de los años 50 como asistente en un estudio fotográfico y que todavía sigue en activo.
Sus trabajos también muestran a grandes artistas del mundo de la música, sobre todo del panorama británico en los años 60, su época dorada.
Una de las salas de la muestra está dedicada a los Rolling Stones, con retratos de todos los miembros del grupo nunca antes mostradas al público y otros más conocidos protagonizados por Mick Jagger, como uno en el que aparece ataviado con una abrigo de piel y capucha.
Otra sala se dedica a los "Iconos en Blanco y Negro", donde Bailey presenta retratos que parecen cobrar vida, como los de la cantante estadounidense Beyoncé, el pintor británico Francis Bacon, el bailaor de flamenco Joaquín Cortés, el reverendo sudafricano Desmond Tutu o la banda inglesa The Queen, entre otros.
Aparte de su interés por los famosos, que ha popularizado su figura, la parte humana de la exhibición la protagonizan personas anónimas desconocidas para el gran público, que el objetivo de David Bailey también quiere mostrar a la sociedad.
"Bailey tiene claro que en sus trabajos no solo quiere retratar a las estrellas del mundo de la moda y la cultura, por quienes tiene mucha admiración, sino que desea que conozcamos a gente de todo el mundo", destacó hoy en la presentación Sandy Nairne, director de la National Portrait Gallery.
Nairne habló además de la "determinación, habilidad y persistencia" en la búsqueda de sus instantáneas de este fotógrafo nacido en 1938, en el este de Londres.
En la sección "Sudán", país al que el artista viajó en los años 80, muestra las condiciones de vida en un campo de refugiados fronterizo con Etiopía y dedica un espacio a las instantáneas de su viaje a Nueva Guinea en 1974, donde retrató las condiciones de vida de las tribus.
La exhibición también dedica un apartado especial a su amistad con Salvador Dalí y Andy Wharhol, a los que conoció en París y que retrató en el Hôtel Meurice de la capital francesa en los años 70.
Aparecen además sus famosos "Box of pin-ups" de 1965, que contienen 36 pequeños retratos de famosos como el actor Terence Stamp, la fotógrafa Cecil Beaton o el representante de The Beatles Brian Epstein.

A full color, sepia tone and especially black and white, has portrayed the camera lens of David Bailey for five decades in the worlds of fashion, music and art, but also the face of the most disadvantaged society in remote parts of the planet.
The collection of provocative and imaginative snapshots have been chosen by the photographer himself, 76, from his voluminous archive for the exhibition "Bailey's Stardust", launched today and can be seen at the Museum of London, from tomorrow until 1 June.
Entry to the exhibition is chaired by a large black and white portrait of the veteran British model Kate Moss, considered one of his muses, but the artist also presents what was his first girlfriend, the model Jean Shrimpton also in a photograph full color taken in the late 60s with a Polaroid.
Fashion is one of the central themes of snapshots David Bailey, who began his career in the late '50s as an assistant at a photography studio and is still active.
His works also show great artists from the worlds of music, particularly on the British scene in the 60s, its golden age.
One of the rooms of the exhibition is devoted to the Rolling Stones, with portraits of all the members of the group never before shown to the public and other celebrity starring Mick Jagger as one in which he appears wearing a fur coat and hood .
Another room is devoted to "Icons in Black and White", where Bailey presents portraits that seem to come alive, as the American singer Beyoncé, the British painter Francis Bacon, the flamenco dancer Joaquín Cortés, the South African Reverend Desmond Tutu or The English band Queen, among others.
Besides his interest in celebrities, has popularized the figure, the human part of the protagonists display anonymous persons unknown to the general public, the goal of David Bailey also wants to show society.
"Bailey is clear that in their work not only wants to portray the stars of the world of fashion and culture, by those who have a lot of admiration, but you want to know people from all over the world," he said today at the launch Sandy Nairne , director of the National Portrait Gallery.
Nairne also spoke of "determination, skill and persistence" in the search of his shots from this photographer born in 1938 in East London.
In the "Sudan" section, the country to which the artist traveled in the 80s, shows the living conditions in a field of border refugees in Ethiopia and devotes considerable space to snapshots of their trip to New Guinea in 1974, where he portrayed the living conditions of the tribes.
The exhibition also devotes a special friendship with Salvador Dalí and Andy Warhol, whom he met in Paris and portrayed in the Hôtel Meurice in Paris in the 70 section.
