Stones Please Don`t Stop: “Esa voz” tiene nombre: Lisa Fischer ..

El Festival de Cine y Documental Musical de Chile, In-Edit Nescafé, inauguró el año pasado su décima edición con Twenty Feet from Stardom (2013), película dirigida por Morgan Neville que habla acerca de un grupo de coristas, cuyo mérito suele permanecer oculto tras el brillo y la popularidad de los artistas a quienes acompañan.

El largometraje -nominado el pasado jueves a los premios Oscar en la categoría “Mejor Documental”- se sumerge en la vida y carrera de Darlene Love, Judith Hill, Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer, Tata Vega y Jo Lawry, mujeres dueñas de voces excepcionales y de un encanto que las hace personajes muy interesantes.

Días antes de la nominación, una de sus protagonistas, la cantante estadounidense Lisa Fischer -quien ha trabajado con músicos y bandas como Tina Turner, Sting, The Rolling Stones y Nine Inch Nails- conversó telefónicamente con "Rocknvivo" desde su casa en Nueva York, ciudad que este año vive uno de los temporales más fríos de su historia. “El invierno es un problema. Tenemos frío, usamos gorro, guantes, tratamos de no pasar mucho tiempo afuera, ¡es muy malo!, pero estamos bien”, dice.

Pero además de su extraordinaria carrera como corista, Fischer posee un disco solista - "So Intense" (1991)- que le valió un premio Grammy en la categoría ‪Mejor Interpretación Vocal Femenina de R&B‬ por su sencillo “How Can I Ease the Pain”.

El amor con el que Lisa se refiere a su experiencia en la música y la manera en que se desenvuelve mientras habla hacen suponer que se trata de una persona que, a pesar de conocer su gran talento, no gasta su tiempo en hacerlo notar. Su parsimoniosa y suave, pero a la vez profunda voz, denotan algo que la ha motivado a seguir trabajando con grandes como The Rolling Stones: la pasión.

Y es justamente con la banda liderada por Mick Jagger y Keith Richards con quienes Lisa Fischer ha colaborado durante la mayor parte de su carrera, trabajando en sus giras los últimos 25 años y, de paso, sumando interesantes postales como su activa participación en el tema “Gimme Shelter”, protagonismo que los músicos le entregaron hace ya varios años (inolvidable es la relación que Mick y Lisa tienen sobre el escenario) y que de alguna forma permite a los amantes de la música conocer el rostro del cual proviene “esa voz”.

Preguntas y respuestas con Lisa Fischer

¿Creíste alguna vez que Twenty Feet from Stardom tendría tal repercusión?

  ¡Para nada! ¡Es surrealista! La primera vez que empezamos a grabar pensé que iba a ser un filme acerca de cantantes y cosas así, ya que nadie pregunta mucho sobre la vida de las coristas, pero la gente se mostró muy interesada y eso me sorprendió mucho.

Una de las cosas que transmites en el filme es tu amor por la música. ¿Cuándo descubriste que era tu pasión?

  Cuando era una niña pequeña, en el jardín de niños. Sólo amaba cantar y me hacía feliz. No lo hacía tan bien, pero lo hacía igual porque me hacía sentir bien, y escuchar música para mí era… ¿Alguna vez has visto esas escenas en que tienen a unas serpientes en una cesta y el domador toca la flauta y las serpientes parece que se movieran al compás de lo que toca? Eso es lo que la música significa para mí, algo mágico e hipnótico que te transporta a tu lugar feliz. Eso es lo que realmente soy.

Y eso no ha cambiado con el tiempo…

¡No! Sigue siendo así y lo amo. Vivo para ello.

¿Qué significó para ti tener entre tus manos el álbum "So Intense" y ver que era algo completamente tuyo?

¡  Oh, wow! Fue algo irreal, no podía creer que estaba terminado. Me tomó dos años hacerlo, quizás tres; estaba muy ocupada, trabajando en medio de los viajes, luego en mi casa, después en el estudio de grabación, luego nuevamente en un viaje, en mi casa de nuevo, en el estudio… así es que realmente tenía en mis manos esto y no podía creerlo. Estaba muy feliz.

En el documental se puede ver el premio Grammy que ganaste en el año 1992 en algún rincón de tu casa, casi olvidado. Sé de otros casos similares y pareciera que en la música los premios tienen un valor, pero no son lo más importante. ¿Tú lo ves así?

  Pienso que es porque viajo mucho, nada en mi casa luce como debiera lucir un hogar con un Grammy (risas). No tengo mucho tiempo para ordenar y no tengo a nadie que me ayude a hacerlo. Es una experiencia muy importante y bella para mí y no es que no lo ame ni disfrute. No sé como explicarlo. Estoy muy agradecida, pero no es que tenga la oportunidad de poner el premio en un lugar especial de la casa porque nada en mi hogar es un lugar adecuado. Lo adecuado es lo que está en mi cuerpo y en mi mente. Quizás porque no existe ese espacio adecuado en mi casa es que siempre me estoy mudando de casa, así que me es difícil hallar un espacio en el que realmente sienta que las cosas pertenecen a ese lugar. Pero sí… ¡amo mi Grammy! No podrías decirlo si lo ves ahí, en medio de todas esas cosas, porque existe tal desorden en mi casa.

 Has cantado junto a grandes de la música: The Rolling Stones, Sting, Tina Turner, NIN, etc. ¿Cómo ha sido tu experiencia junto a ellos?

Todas esas experiencias han sido un aprendizaje y algo muy excitante. Cada persona, cada artista tiene su propia cosa especial en lo que hace, así es que para mí, el poder estar ahí y aprender de ellos, escucharlos, es tan increíble porque todos son tan poderosos, pero al mismo tiempo tan distintos. Y una cosa que todos ellos tienen en común es que son espontáneos. Realmente buscan eso, como yo lo escucho en las coristas, así es que tenemos esa cosa en común y compartimos ese espacio en el que todos nos entendemos.

¿Con qué otro músico te gustaría trabajar?  

¡Oh, wow! ¡Son tantos! Concha Buika, me gusta mucho… ¡wow! ¿Quién más podría ser? Discúlpame si no te los digo todos, pero lo hermoso de la música, para mí, es que me gusta trabajar con todos. Estoy siempre dispuesta a cantar con todas las personas, eso es muy divertido para mí, cantar con gente de otros países e incluso con personas a quienes no les entienda su idioma, ¡eso es muy excitante!

 Has estado en este negocio por 30 años, has trabajado con grandes músicos y tienes un disco y un Grammy. ¿Cómo resumirías tu vida en la música?

En amor, mucho amor. Sólo haciendo sonidos con personas y compartiéndolos con ellos porque realmente siento que la música sana a la gente y puede sanar al mundo. Para mí ha sido vivir mi vida haciendo lo que me gusta y eso para mí es un regalo.

¿Tienes en mente realizar un nuevo disco?

  Pienso que volveré a grabar y a hacer un disco, pero no sé… Sí, creo que sí (risas). Trabajaré en ello cuando tenga un minuto entre los viajes, viajo mucho, pero sí, me encantaría.

Nine Inch Nails es una de las bandas que visitará Chile este año, ¿será posible verte por acá?  

No, no en esta ocasión. Salí de gira con Nine Inch Nails el año pasado y fue una tremenda experiencia y lo que aprendí de Trent y la banda es que cada vez que hacían su show, querían darle al público algo nuevo. Es como una forma de mostrar lo mucho que ellos quieren a sus fans y yo creo que esta vez, cuando lleguen allá, van a mostrar algo nuevo y excitante a sus fans y si alguien más quiere ver lo que pasa en los shows de Nine Inch Nails, con las coristas y todo, puede entrar al sitio web de la banda, ya que ahí hay un link que permite ver lo que el grupo cambia entre un show y otro, cosa que hacen muy a menudo y eso lo encuentro muy desafiante.

¿Participarás entonces en la gira junto a The Rolling Stones este año?

Sí, este año estaré junto a ellos.

¿Y hay posibilidades de verte en Sudamerica?

No sé aún cuál es el calendario, pero en el sitio web de los Stones pronto deberían aparecer los shows de este año.

¿Cuál es tu disco favorito de todos los tiempos?

¡Wow! Probablemente es Ask Rufus (1977) de Rufus & Chaka Khan porque fue el primer álbum que me pude comprar (risas), ¡nunca antes me había comprado un disco!

The film , nominated last Thursday at the Academy Awards in the category " Best Documentary" - is immersed in the life and career of Darlene Love , Judith Hill , Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer, Jo Lawry and Tata Vega , women owners of exceptional voices and a charm that makes them very interesting characters.

Days before the nomination , one of its protagonists, the American singer Lisa Fischer , who has worked with musicians and bands such as Tina Turner , Sting , The Rolling Stones and Nine Inch Nails - spoke by telephone with " Rocknvivo " from his home in New York city this year is experiencing one of the coldest time in its history. " Winter is a problem. We're cold , we use hats, gloves , try not to spend much time outside,it's very bad! , But we're fine , "he says .

But in addition to his extraordinary career as a singer , Fischer has a solo album - "So Intense " (1991 ) - which earned him a Grammy Award in the category ‪ Best Female Pop Vocal Performance R & B ‬ for his single " How Can I Ease the Pain " .

The love with which Lisa refers to his experience in music and the way it operates while talking make suppose that this is a person who, despite knowing his great talent, do not spend your time doing notes . His parsimonious and soft, yet deep voice , denote something that has motivated to continue working with such greats as The Rolling Stones : passion.

You thought that you ever would Stardom Twenty Feet from such an impact ?

   For nothing! It's surreal! When I first started recording I thought it would be a film about singing and stuff, because no one asks much about the lives of singers, but people were very interested and that surprised me.

One of the things you convey in the film is a love for music . When did you discover it was your passion?

When I was a little girl in kindergarten . Just loved to sing and made me happy . Not doing so well , but I did not care because it made me feel good, and listen to music for me was ... Have you ever seen those scenes with some snakes in a basket and the trainer plays the flute and snakes seem to to move to the beat of it touches ? That's what music means to me , something magical and hypnotic that takes you to your happy place. That's what I really am.

And that has not changed over time ...

No! Remains well and love it. Live it.

What did it mean to you to have in your hands the album " So Intense " and see that it was something completely yours?

   Oh , wow! It was unreal , I could not believe it was over. It took me two years to do it , maybe three , he was busy working on means of travel , then my house , then in the studio , then again on a journey , in my house back in the studio ... that's I really had it in my hands and I could not believe it. I was very happy.

In the documentary you can see who won the Grammy Award in 1992 in a corner of your house, almost forgotten. I know of similar cases and to look like in the music awards have value, but they are not the most important . Do you see it as well ?

I think it's because I travel a lot, nothing in my house looks as it should look a home with a Grammy ( laughs). Do not have much time to order and have no one to help me do it. It is a very important and beautiful experience for me and is not that what love and enjoyment. I do not know how to explain it . I am very grateful , but it's not having the opportunity to put the award in a special place in the house because nothing in my home is a suitable place . The appropriate approach is what is in my body and my mind . Perhaps because there is no such adequate space in my house is that I am always moving house , so it's hard to find a place where you really feel like things are in there. But ...I love my Grammy ! You could not say it if you see it there in the midst of all those things , because there is such a mess in my house.

You've sung with great music : The Rolling Stones, Sting, Tina Turner, NIN, etc . How was your experience with them ?

All these experiences have been learning and very exciting . Every person, every artist has their own special thing that makes , so for me, to be there and learn from them , listen to them, is so amazing because everyone is so powerful, but yet so different . And one thing they all have in common is that they are spontaneous . Really looking for that , as I listen to the chorus , so I have that thing in common and share the space in which we all understand .

What other musician you want to work?

Oh , wow! There are so many ! Concha Buika , I really like ...wow! Who else could it be? Excuse me if I tell you all , but the beauty of the music , for me, is that I like to work with everyone. I'm always willing to sing with everyone , that's really fun for me to sing with people from other countries and even with people who do not understand their language,that's very exciting!

You've been in this business for 30 years , you've worked with great musicians and have a drive and a Grammy . How would you summarize your life in music?

In love, much love. Just making sounds with people and sharing with them because I really feel that music heals people and can heal the world . For me it has been like to live my life doing what I love and that is my gift.

Have in mind to make a new album?

I think I 'll record and make a record, but I do not know ... Yes , I think so ( laughs). Work on it when I have a minute between trips , travel a lot , but yes, I would.

Nine Inch Nails is one of the bands that visit Chile this year , is it possible to see you over here ?

No, not this time . I went on tour with Nine Inch Nails last year and it was a tremendous experience and what I learned from Trent and the band is increasingly doing their show , they wanted to give the audience something new. It's like a way to show how much they love their fans and I think that this time, when they get there , they will show something new and exciting his fans and if anyone else wants to see what happens in the shows of Nine Inch Nails with showgirls and everything can go to the website of the band, because there's a link that lets you see what the group switched from one show to another, which they do very often and that I find very challenging .

What then you will participate in the tour with The Rolling Stones this year?

Yes, this year I will be with them .

And there are chances to see you in South America ?

I do not know yet what is the timetable , but website Stones should appear soon shows this year.
