También había una pistola y munición, pero el juez solo impuso al rolling una multa porque el arma estaba en desuso y concluyó que la policía había montado la operación por tirria personal hacia el músico.
Los detalles de aquel escándalo han salido a la luz pública de la mano del diario The Guardian después de que los documentos de la época de Scotland Yard hayan sido desclasificados y publicados por los Archivos Nacionales.


Cuando entró la policía, Richards y su compañera sentimental, Anita Pallenberg, estaban durmiendo en el dormitorio del primer piso de la casa, en Cheyne Walk, una elegante callejuela del barrio de Chelsea, frente al Támesis. Esta zona era habitada por vecinos tan famosos como su colega Mick Jagger, que vivió allí con Marianne Faithfull en 1968; el primer ministro David Lloyd George; el escritor Henry James o el legendario ingeniero del siglo XIX Isambard Kingdom Brunel.


En otro dormitorio estaba un amigo de la pareja, el príncipe Jean Christien Stanislaus Klossowski, que el informe policial describía como "el autoproclamado heredero del trono polaco", pero al que los amigos le conocían como Stash.


Mientras Keith y Anita se vestían, la policía encontró una caja con diversos tipos de drogas, desde hierba a heroína y pastillas de Mandrax, un medicamento sedante-hipnótico similar en sus efectos a un barbitúrico. La atmósfera en aquellos momentos debía estar bastante cargada, como denotan algunos pasajes del cambio de impresiones entre Richards y el responsable de la operación. Según el documento policial, cuando el rolling iba camino del baño después de asegurar que no vivían allí, el policía le llamó: "Keith, ¿puede venir un momento aquí, por favor?", a lo que este respondió con un cortante: "Señor Richards para usted". El agente quería saber por qué, si esa no era su casa, estaban colgados en la pared varios discos de oro a nombre suyo o de los Rolling Stones.


Ya era sabido que en aquella operación la policía encontró también una pistola y munición pero que, como la policía admitió que estaba en malas condiciones y no había sido utilizada, Richards solo fue condenado por poseer un arma de fuego sin licencia, algo que en aquella época solo estaba penado con una multa.


En su autobiografía, Richards afirma que aquella pistola era un antiguo juguete de un noble francés de finales del siglo XIX. Pero según el parte policial ahora desvelado, el guitarrista dio entonces una explicación diferente. Según Scotland Yard, el músico aseguró que aquella pistola se le había comprado en San Francisco por 200 dólares (144 euros) un seguidor suyo llamado Leroy Leonard, para protegerse en un viaje a Jamaica. "Si vives allí lo mejor es tener un arma para protegerte", afirmó. Y aseguró que solo la había disparado una vez para saber si funcionaba.
