Keith Richards: “Mientras me dé la gana y haya gente que lo escuche, seguiremos”

Si todo va según lo previsto, el próximo va a ser un año muy ocupado para Keith Richards. Está a punto de comenzar los ensayos,  para la gira de 15 fechas por estadios de Norteamérica con los Rolling Stones y tiene un nuevo álbum propio,  listo con fecha de publicación prevista , más o menos para septiembre, e incluso podría apoyarlo con su primera gira en solitario desde 1993. Hemos hablado de todo esto y más con Richards, quien respondió al teléfono a Rolling Stone , después de nuestra charla con Mick Jagger.

Acabo de hablar con Mick y me ha dicho que estabas pensando en tocar Sticky fingers entero durante esta gira. ¿Cuál es tu opinión al respecto?

Bueno, no ha sido idea mía. Estuvimos dándole vueltas. No sé si lo haríamos cada noche. Podríamos hacerlo en lugares concretos. En primer lugar, tenemos que ensayar todo. Cuando él me lo comentó le dije: “Sí, no es Exile on Main St . Podríamos hacerlo”.

Mick estaba preocupado porque habría demasiadas baladas…

No sé. Era sólo una idea. Cuando lleguemos a los ensayos lo intentaremos.

Me encantaría escuchar Moonlight mile y Sister Morphine.

Es muy raro que toquemos esas. Tocarlo en el mismo orden es una idea interesante. Vamos a ver cómo va. Me gustaría intentarlo.

¿Cuándo comienzan los ensayos?

Creo que a finales de abril vamos a ir a Los Ángeles un par de semanas y luego los llevaremos hasta San Diego para trabajar sobre el escenario.

¿Crees que podría haber algún ensayo con público?

No he visto nada sobre eso todavía. Por lo general se hace mucho más cerca del evento, así que no sé nada sobre eso todavía.

Según tú, ¿es muy distinto tocar para un estadio que para un Arena?

No resulta tan drástico. Es sólo que es mucho más grande. Y con estadios siempre tienes que tener en cuenta el clima. Dios se une a la banda de un modo u otro.

Sus giras suelen durar unos dos años y luego siguen largos periodos de descanso. ¿Por qué está siendo esta tan diferente?

Creo que todos han disfrutando de verdad de estos últimos años en la carretera. El último descanso fue muy largo; unos cinco años. Creo que todo el mundo lo echó de menos de verdad, porque volvimos con mucha energía.

¿Sientes estos conciertos más distintos que en otras giras?

Es muy difícil de decir. Una vez que estoy en el escenario es un terreno muy familiar para mí. Todos los públicos son ligeramente diferentes, pero lo cierto es que lo que sobre el escenario yo no soy diferente. Las cosas siguen igual.

Más allá del Sticky Fingers, ¿habrá algunas canciones inusuales en directo que esperas tocar esta gira?

Es pronto. Hablaremos sobre ello. Supongo que voy a ver a Mick la próxima semana. No tengo ninguna duda de que el tema se planteará.

¿Vais a traer Mick Taylor a la gira?

Um, no estoy seguro. Lo último que supe… No estoy seguro de si está disponible o en qué condiciones anda últimamente. Estoy esperando oír hablar de ello.

Es una pena porque es completamente Sticky Fingers.

Sí, es algo de eso. No estoy seguro. Yo no me he metido en ello, pero he oído que estaba enfermo. [A través de un representante, Taylor dice que no está enfermo y que no ha sido invitado a la gira.]

¿Ves Sticky Fingers como una grabación decisiva en la evolución de la banda?

Bueno, fue una de ellas. Beggars banquet fue otra. Pero con Sticky Fingers estuvimos trabajando mucho con  Jimmy Miller [productor]; fue un período muy fructífero.

Y en una nueva etiqueta, por lo tanto tenía un poco más de libertad, ¿no?

Sí, sí. Esa fue la primera en el sello, así que hicimos casi todo lo que queríamos hacer. Aunque… siempre lo hacíamos de todos modos. ¿Qué fue después de Sticky fingers ? ¿Fue  Goats Head Soup o algo así?

Fue Exile…

Ah, sí, por supuesto. Los mezclo. Sticky fingers fue el último que hicimos en Inglaterra en nuestra vieja guarida, Olympic Studios. Justo después de eso nos mudamos.

Me imagino que esta gira será agridulce ya que es la primera desde que Bobby Keys falleció .

Hombre, sin duda va a perder, sobre todo entre bastidores. Él era un buen, buen amigo mío. Pero él sería el primero en decir “El show debe continuar”.

¿Crees que habrá un nuevo álbum de los Stones en algún momento?

Estamos hablando de grabar algo después de esta gira, pero no hay nada definido. Solo hemos lanzado idea. Me gustaría tener a los chicos de vuelta en el estudio otra vez, sí. Puede pasar cualquier cosa.

¿En qué estado se halla tu nuevo disco en solitario?

Creo que va a salir en septiembre.

¿Está totalmente terminado?

Recién terminado, sí. Estamos buscando el hueco adecuado para lanzarlo. Los Stones han estado trabajando mucho últimamente, así que he estado esperando hasta que he encontrado el momento adecuado. Creo que será en septiembre, pero no sé a ciencia cierta.

¿Quién toca en él?

Steve Jordan [batería] y yo. Nos acompañan aquí y allá Waddy Wachtel [guitarrista]  y  Bernard Fowler [corista en los Rolling Stones]. Steve y yo lo hicimos juntos.

¿Estás pensando en hacer conciertos propios para promocionarlo?

Lo estoy pensando. Por el momento solo tengo cabeza para los Stones; no he pensado en lo que haré después. Pero por lo general si lanzo un disco también hago un poco de trabajo en la carretera. Así que es posible.

¿Sientes la misma emoción de siempre por tocar en directo?

Sí. Es una sensación única, realmente, y del tipo que da pensa perdérsela. Estoy listo para subirme allí. He estado esperándolo.

Sé que te lo han preguntado un millón de veces, pero ¿ves un momento, en el futuro, en que la banda deje de tocar?

No, nunca pienso en eso. Eso se lo dejo a otras personas…

Supongo que si Chuck Berry tiene casi 90 años y sigue haciendo esto …

Exacto. Mientras me dé la gana y haya gente que lo escuche, seguiremos.

¿Qué es lo que esperas que hagan los Stones antes de que decidan terminar?

Esa es una buena pregunta. Me gustaría ver lo lejos que pueden llegar a evolucionar. No tengo peticiones especiales o visiones particulares, pero tú eres parte de esto, y quiero ver hasta dónde vamos a llegar.

Siempre estoy tan impresionado con Charlie [Watts, batería de los Rolling Stones]. Siempre parece ir a mejor.

Sí. Es un batería increíble.

Recuerdo que hace unos años, Johnny Depp estaba rodando un documental sobre ti. Incluso hubo especie de actuación que filmó. ¿Qué pasó con eso?

Grabamos algunas cosas, pero no creo que haya nada previsto sobre eso. No creo que él vaya a utilizar el material de archivo y creo que no he visto a Johnny desde hace un par de años.

Ya con esto termino, pero me gustaría insistir sobre Moonlight mile, porque siempre he querido escucharla en directo. ¿Crees que la vas a tocar?

Sí. Te diré lo que haré: Voy a tocarla para ti ahora mismo. [Risas]

Keith Richards: "While I feel like it and there are people who will listen, we will continue"

If all goes as planned, the next will be a very busy year for Keith Richards. It is about to begin rehearsals for the tour of 15 dates for stadiums in North America with the Rolling Stones and has its own new album ready with planned publication date, roughly in September, and could even support it with their first tour solo since 1993. We talked about all this and more with Richards, who answered the phone at Rolling Stone, after our chat with Mick Jagger.

I just talked to Mick and told me you were thinking about playing around Sticky fingers during this tour. What is your opinion?

Well, it was not my idea. We batted around. I do not know if we would do every night. We could do it in specific places. First, we have to try everything. When he told me I said, "Yes, is not Exile on Main St. We could do ".

Mick was worried it would be too many ballads ...

I do not know. It was just an idea. When we get to rehearsals will try.

Would love to hear Moonlight mile and Sister Morphine.

It is very rare that we touch these. Touch in the same order is an interesting idea. Let's see how it goes. I would like to try.

When testing begin?

I think at the end of April we will go to Los Angeles a couple of weeks and then take you to San Diego to work on stage.

Do you think there might be some test audience?

I have not seen anything about it yet. Usually it is much closer to the event, so do not know anything about it yet.

According to you, is very different playing to a stadium for Arena?

Not so drastic. It's just much bigger. And stadiums always have to consider the weather. God joins the band in one way or another.

Their tours usually last about two years and then followed by long periods of rest. Why is this being so different?

I think everyone really enjoying these last years on the road. The last break was very long; about five years. I think everyone missed really, because back with lots of energy.

Do you feel these more different than other tours concerts?

It is very difficult to say. Once I'm on stage is a very familiar terrain for me. All public are slightly different, but the truth is that what onstage I'm no different. Things remain the same.

Beyond the Sticky Fingers, will there be some unusual songs live you expect to play this tour?

It's early. We'll talk about it. I guess I'll see you next week Mick. I have no doubt that the issue will arise.

Are you going to bring the tour Mick Taylor?

Um, I'm not sure. Last I heard ... I'm not sure if it is available or under what conditions walks lately. I'm waiting to hear about it.

It's a shame because it is completely Sticky Fingers.

You see Sticky Fingers as a decisive recording the evolution of the band?

Ah, yes, of course. I mix. Sticky fingers was the last thing we did in England in our old haunt, Olympic Studios. Right after that we moved.

I imagine that this tour will be bittersweet because it is the first since Bobby Keys died.

Man definitely going to lose, especially among racks. He was a good, good friend. But he would be the first to say, "The show must go on".

Do you think there will be a new Stones album sometime?

We are talking about record something after this tour, but nothing definite. We have just launched idea. I would take the boys back in the studio again, yes. Anything can happen.

What state is your new album is solo?

I think it will come out in September.

Are you totally finished?

Newly finished, yes. We are looking for the right space to launch. The Stones have been working a lot lately, so I've been waiting until I found the right time. I think it will be in September, but do not know for sure.

Who plays in it?

Steve Jordan [drums] and myself. We're joined here and there Waddy Wachtel [guitarist] and Bernard Fowler [chorus girl in the Rolling Stones]. Steve and I did together.

Are you thinking of making own concerts to promote it?

I'm thinking. At the moment I have just head to the Stones; I have not thought about what I will do next. But usually if I throw a disc I also do some work on the road. So it's possible.

Do you feel the same thrill of always playing live?

Yes. It's a unique feeling, really, and the guy who gives pensa miss. I'm ready to get on there. I've been waiting for.

I know you've been asked a million times, but do you see a time in the future when the band stops playing?

No, I never think about it. I leave that to others ...

I guess if Chuck Berry has nearly 90 years and continues to do this ...

Exactly. While I please and there are people who will listen, we will continue.

What do you expect them to do the Stones before they decide to end?

That is a good question. I would like to see how far you can reach evolve. I have no special requests or particular views, but you are part of this, and I want to see how far we get.

I am always so impressed with Charlie [Watts, drummer of the Rolling Stones]. Always seems to get better.

Yes. It's an incredible battery.

I remember a few years ago, Johnny Depp was filming a documentary on you. There was even kind of action filmed. What happened with that?

We recorded some stuff, but I do not have anything planned on that. I do not think he's going to use the footage and I think I have not seen Johnny for a couple of years ago.
