Desde hace una década es el bajista de los Rolling Stones en las giras. De paso por la Argentina, habló de su privilegiado rol.
Madonna, Sting, Peter Gabriel, Eric Clapton, Rolling Stones. Si de currículums se trata, el de Darryl Jones (51) se lleva todas las miradas. Oriundo de Chicago, fue durante su infancia cuando decidió dedicar su vida a aprender la técnica del bajo. Un vecino que se encargó de enseñarle los primeros movimientos, mucha práctica de por medio y una audición frente al mismísimo Miles Davis, LA leyenda del jazz, lo lanzaron por completo a su carrera como sesionista..
“Conocía a un sobrino de Miles; solíamos practicar juntos. Un día me comentó que su tío estaba buscando un nuevo bajista y me convenció”, cuenta. La prueba resultó todo un éxito: Darryl se unió a la banda y tuvo su debut allá por 1983. Semejante experiencia y una marcada devoción por el perfeccionismo lo llevaron a compartir escenario con otras grandes estrellas de la industria, entre ellas, los Rolling Stones.
Convocado para la presentación del nuevo Ford Focus en Mendoza, Darryl se unió a Bernard Fowler y Jimmy Rip para hacer algunos temas de Sus Majestades Satánicas y, de paso, contar cómo se siente pertenecer a semejante gigante del rock and roll.
¿Cuál es la fórmula para cambiar de género y pasar de tocar jazz a hacerlo con Madonna o Clapton en el mismo nivel?
La versatilidad es una característica fundamental que debe tener un sesionista. En la música todo es sentimental; uno comienza a entenderse con su colega mientras pasan los minutos, asimila su groove y va formando una atmósfera particular.
Hace 20 años formas parte de los Rolling Stones, pero muy poca gente ha notado tu presencia.
Es cierto, pero pasa por una decisión personal. Mi máxima preocupación pasa por hacer mi trabajo de la mejor manera, me encanta la música y no me cambia en absoluto si me toca estar frente al público o hacerlo desde las sombras.
Sin embargo, en 1993 te tocó reemplazar a Bill Wyman, quien sí era considerado un Rolling Stone. ¿Por qué no sucede lo mismo con vos?
Es una excelente pregunta, pero no soy yo quien tenga que responderla. Entré al grupo gracias a una audición, estuve a la altura y creo haberme ganado mi lugar. El público es muy respetuoso, pero si soy lo suficientemente reconocido es algo que deberían contestar Mick, Keith, Ron y Charlie, a quienes les tengo un gran afecto.
No se me ocurren hechos más significativos para un músico que formar parte de una leyenda como los Stones. ¿Por qué siguen tan vigentes y no han aparecido bandas de ese calibre?
Porque ellos son grandes músicos que, además, tuvieron la habilidad de aparecer en el momento correcto, en el lugar correcto y ante el público correcto. Es una cadena de cosas positivas que los ubicó en un lugar de privilegio que mantendrán hasta el final. Viven pensando en música, y a pesar de que cada uno tiene su personalidad y preferencias, al momento de tocar son profesionales de verdad y su vigencia queda justificada en cada presentación.
Te vi cruzar los dedos cuando te preguntaban por un posible regreso de los Stones a la Argentina. ¿Hay novedades respecto a eso?
Acompaño a los Stones en cada una de sus giras y ahora estamos en un momento de descanso. Pero soy positivo, creo que el año que viene van a recibir buenas noticias de parte nuestra. Siempre es un placer venir a la Argentina.

Such experience and a strong devotion to perfectionism led him to share the stage with other big stars in the industry , including the Rolling Stones.

What is the formula for gender change and move from playing jazz to do with Madonna or Clapton at the same level ?
Versatility is a key feature that should have a sideman . In music everything is sentimental , one begins to understand his colleague while the minutes pass , assimilates its groove and builds up a particular atmosphere .
20 years ago forms part of the Rolling Stones, but very few people have noticed your presence.
True, but goes through a personal decision . My biggest concern going to do my job in the best way , I love music and I do not change at all if I have to be to the public or do it from the shadows.
However, in 1993 you had to replace Bill Wyman , who himself was considered a Rolling Stone. Why not so with you?
It's an excellent question , but I'm not one to have to answer . I walked the group through an audition , I was up and I 've earned my place . The crowd is very respectful, but if I'm recognized enough is something that should answer Mick , Keith , Ron and Charlie , who I have a great affection.
I can not think most significant for a musician to be part of a legend as the Stones. Why are as valid and have not appeared bands of that caliber ?
Because they are great musicians who also had the ability to appear at the right time in the right place at the right audience . It is a chain of positive things that stood in a place of privilege that remain to the end. Thinking live music, and although each has its own personality and preferences are touching when true professionals and its validity is justified in each presentation.
I saw you cross your fingers when you asked about a possible return of the Stones to Argentina . Any news on that?
Accompanied the Stones on each of their tours and are now in a moment of rest . But I'm positive , I think next year they will receive good news from us. Always a pleasure to come to Argentina .
