Terry O'Neill, a particular view today about the Rolling Stones, beyond his excellent photography (Interview)

Seminarian to flight attendant, and from there to photograph the biggest stars. It is not an orthodox place, but the play went right: Frank Sinatra, Paul Newman, Ava Gardner, Kate Moss or Isabel II posed for him. But Terry O'Neill (London, 1938) owes its reputation to the rise of British rock in the decade of the 60. It was the first to portray The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

"My parents, Irish, wanted to be a priest. It was not mine, "says the photographer. "I started working at British Airways, because I wanted to play drums, and travel as stewardess to New York, three days a week, there was the birthplace of jazz; my destiny was to take pictures, to the famous who came to London Airport, for a campaign of the company.

"In 1959 he was lucky, to meet the then Interior Minister slept in a boarding lounge, and earned him a contract with the Daily Sketch. "They liked the image. Just then, pop music started to become very big in England, and needed a photographer for 20 years to portray these young bands emerging ". His first band was The Beatles at Abbey Road Studios, where they recorded their first album, Please Please Me. "Two days later, they sent me to photograph the Stones". Today shows unpublished photos of their Satanic Majesties, in an exhibition in Madrid, organized by Mondo Gallery and Jose Cuervo. (1)

The question is inevitable: Imposes photograph the two biggest bands in history? "They were dying because the photograph, were starting and wanted to get out in the media. The beauty of the time, is that novice groups were not so controlled by their representatives as now. Everything was very natural and close. They were beginning, were pure, very young and naïve, as musicians. We could see everything as something temporary, not even remotely suspected that go so far. I met several times with the two groups in the same club. They talked about music, at that time there was no rivalry.

"O'Neill melts in praise with those guys, now go up in encyclopedias, but also criticizes in what have become. "I do not have much contact with the Rolling Stones. Sometimes I talk with Bill Wyman, because we live nearby. But I have no phone relationship with Mick. The first time I met him was nothing more than a post-adolescent singer, and shy in a band, like so many others. When Brian Jones died, the founder, he took the lead, and today is possibly the largest group the world, and they are involved in the machinery industry. Now charge 19 lbs [about 25 euros] to go to see an exhibition on The Rolling Stones, at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the city where they were born. Three years ago there was there a case of Bowie, with new material, and admission was free. That gives an idea of who keeps feet on the ground, and who is not. They continue to lead a life of stars. But it's your life, not mine. "

The cultural impact of the Rolling Stones, through Exhibitionism

How is go Exhibitionism, the huge London exhibition that reviews the cultural impact of the Rolling Stones with an intimate look at the personal files of its members and collaborators

The public is deafening sound. There are thousands of people shouting and cheering, waiting for the band. The guitars and basses, divided into three boxes marked with the names of its performers, expect their owners take their supports.

Behind a white curtain materials they are makeup, and a coat rack holds bright silk shirts. It is the backstage of a show of the Rolling Stones, just really is not. It is a recreation, but the feeling is that it generates is so real that at any time a door opens and will Mick Jagger on his way to the stage.

That's what achieves Exhibitionism exhibition, which includes more than 550 objects from the history of the band and uses them partly as a museum exhibit, and partly to recreations of everyday environments of the band, as this behind the scenes. The public goes backstage to a room where a video is displayed in 3D Satisfaction band playing, and there is the feeling that one was there with these rockers veterans.

Before reaching that area (which actually is the end of the route), the viewer was in the studio mixing songs from the band on a console, and playing with the sound of each instrument, appreciating small wonders like the bass riff of Miss you isolated from the rest of the band; he heard Martin Scorsese discuss the irregular history of the Stones on the big screen, and even saw objects as hairdressing chair in the band cut his hair during his tours.

However, the beginning of the sample does not seem announce what comes next, because their sensory impact is nothing remarkable. The first room contains just three projections with figures and data as the cities that have gone on tour, or for how long the songs recorded in more than 50-year career.

This is followed by an audiovisual presentation that reviews the career of the Stones (and that includes some seconds the band playing in Montevideo), and thereafter as everything becomes more interesting. a recreation of the apartment in which Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Brian Jones lived in London during the early years of the group, where the origins of the band are discussed is traversed, and the expectations of those twentysomethings who dreamed contemplated "to buy a boat "or" lead the rankings in the United States and England, "as he told their fan club in a sort of identikit personal, handwritten and exhibited in the sample.

Exhibitionism, presented at the Saatchi Gallery in London until September, then start a world tour for four years, it is an almost obligatory pilgrimage for every fan of the band. Not only because of the historical value of what is shown there, but also by the possibility of giving a first-person look at the work of the Stones.

All this is complemented by interviews with the four current members of the band, as well as several collaborators, and a sample of instruments, photographs and other items of personal files Wood, Jagger, Richards and Watts.

Exhibitionism the second part is devoted to the influence of other artists band: first in the case of filmmakers and producers, makers of video clips of the group; then move to one of the most attractive parts of the show, which is responsible for the photographic and visual appearance of the Stones.

From the history of the legendary logo of the tongue (which contrary to legend, it is not inspired in the mouth of Mick Jagger) to posters and stage designs, where the group has pioneered combining the power of music with deployment lights, screens, fireworks, scenery and more.

All that you have supplemented their musical strength and that has made them remain a sight worth seeing, without becoming a parody or self-homage themselves, they can be seen in this section, where the close relationship of the musicians is with artists such as Andy Warhol, photographers like Annie Leibovitz, and set designers and ilumnadores Broadway responsible for the designs of their scenarios, from the "loto" tour of 1975 by the US, to the bridge of the tour Bridges to Babylon that it cost a million dollars, paid by Jagger.

Of course the scene also plays its role clothing. And the next section collects from the same costumes they used the initiative of its manager in its early days, to the complicated, extravagant and highly personalized outfits that have been used since the late 1960s onwards, and which were made by famous designers all the world.

The Rolling Stones are much more than rock & roll. With his career spanning over half a century they are also a trademark, an important part of modern culture, a reference in terms of design and fashion and even a source of inspiration for other artists.

Exhibitionism has an "official" band idyllic, view but that does not prevent the sample is a compilation of the cultural influence of the Stones and recognition to women and men who contributed their talents to create group identity.

: The Rolling Stones! .

(Tan "Reales" y tan distintos)

Y no miente José.

Even in this! The biggest band on the planet! : The Rolling Stones! . In La Plata, the choripán (Sandwich of Sausage!) Beat Paul McCartney!

(Both so Royal and so different)

Mick Jagger words to the argentinian public:
"Charlie took a walk along Costanera and he ate a choripan with chimichurri"

Despite the request of Paul McCartney, outside the stadium the bondiola did not lack, the “chori” and hamburger

In La Plata, the choripán beat Paul McCartney

Along route 32 between 18th and 19th, people jostled in the post of Gustavo and his family. There you can find the very argentinian flavor of the sandwiches "of field" as the choripan, the bondiola and the inevitable burger.

But tonight is not a night for stallholders, among the many nights made for those who live in the area, when there is a football game or concert. In the Stage plays Paul McCartney, who had a flashy request, before the concert: No meat in the vicinity of the field.

"I thought he meant he (McCartney) did not want them to be sold on the field" says Gustavo.
The man, 55, brags of having "the only homemade chorizos in La Plata"

He adds: "I know he does not eat meat, he takes care of himself, and maybe he wants to be imitated." However, the large number of people who come to the food stalls located on the avenue 32 give ground with any pretense from the musician.

To give an idea of the consumption expected at night, Gustavo explains that he bought "90 kilos of pork tenderloin, 200 burgers and 200 chorizos". "When they came (The Rolling Stones) I had almost 200 kilos of meat and I had to go out and buy more," he recalls.

Joseph, another classic “platense” (from La Plata) vendor, said about McCartney "I do not listen his music really" and it was a little more "to the bone" (in vain) when referring to the request of the artist. "He's crazy if he thought he would be able to kick out the stallholders. You can not make a concert with no food on the streets, imagine a soccer game. The fans will kill you if they do not get a chori when leaving the match".

And Jose is not lying. In the faces-and in the hands- of the consumers there is the evidence. "A butterfly chori", he asks for one. Of course, "with a lot of “chimi”, please!

[Carcajada] ¡No sé si valiente o loca!

One is Lisa Fischer, showgirl Rolling Stones, between 1989 and 2015, also serving on tours, which now embarks on a new course solo stop this Friday May 20, 2016 - 7:30 PM in Barbican ( Silk Street, London, United Kingdom)

It's a surprise to see it as a solo artist. A response to the impact of the film? Yes, largely so. The film made possible many people, he realized the work of the choristers. It was a very exciting project.

What did you think when the director Morgan Neville, said, "Let's make a documentary about A Chorus Line"? Oh my God! To begin with I thought it was crazy! . Came to see a concert by Sting and his idea he seemed nice and crazy. In New York, we know almost everyone, but I had never coincided with Merry Clayton, the original voice of 'Gimme Shelter', nor with Tata Vega. It was very nice.

It seems, that never wanted to be a star, but his goal was simply singing. Many of my friends had a clear objective: to compose, search for a contract ... I was happy to be part of a group, joining voices, harmonies. Are your roots are in the soul? My grandmothers sang in church, and made sure their grandchildren, they did well. I sang there, and then at home, I grew up listening to a lot Tamla Motown, and Nat King Cole, Otis Redding, Diana Ross ...

Use with the Rolling Stones, started with 'Steel Wheels' (1989), album and tour. First I worked with Mick Jagger on his solo tour, and when the Stones decided to meet, it was easier to keep. I learned a lot with Mick, taught me to sing his music. It was vital beyond music experience.

With moments of brilliance: 'Gimme Shelter'. Before 1989, there had been female vocalists in the tours, and for me it was an opportunity to convey energy and experience the beauty of that song. The way Keith Richards plays Gimme Shelter, is like someone crying. I thank you for having made!

Why do you keep playing? For love of music: they live it, breathe and enjoy, and that love comes and goes, like a ball, between the stage and the audience, and going and going ...

Is it natural for a rock'n'roll band includes soul voices to convey passion? It makes sense thinking blues and soul, it was what they heard when they started. When Merry Clayton, entered the studio to record 'Gimme Shelter', in 1969, it was a step in the natural evolution. And me another step.

In 1991, he released a solo album, 'So intense', which gave him a 'hit' and a Grammy. Why not record more? I was going to, but the president of the company was moved to another label, and that ended up changing his mind, and I lost my company. I was an affected time confusing. But all I wanted was to sing and I followed. He is no longer with the Stones. No, I did not go to South America with them, because I have had wonderful offers to give my own concerts. I'm at a good time, although I miss. They were family to me.

Do you have to be brave to say no to the Rolling Stones? [Laughter] I do not know whether brave or crazy! It's scary, yes, but that has connected me with my profile singer: there are so many wonderful songs in the world, waiting to be sung ... I'm in a very open now, I can do what I always dreamed, and begin to see green shoots.
