Una exhibición en Nueva York reveló por primera vez las Polaroids que inspiraron el arte pop icónico de Warhol.


Sus serigrafías de Marilyn Monroe y Elizabeth Taylor pasaron a convertirse en algunas de las más famosas -y caras- obras de arte de todos los tiempos. Pero estamos menos familiarizados con las Polaroids que el artista pop Andy Warhol utilizó como referencia.


Las cándidas fotos de algunas de las estrellas más famosas del mundo han sido objeto de una nueva exposición. Los retratos, tomados por Warhol durantes los años 70s y 80s, incluyen estrellas del mundo de la música, cine y deportes, desde Mick Jagger, Liza Minnelli y John Lennon hasta Arnold Schwarzenegger , Jerry Hall o Muhammad Ali.

An exhibition in New York first revealed the Polaroids that inspired the iconic pop art of Warhol.

His screen prints of Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor went on to become some of the most famous-and expensive-art of all time. But we are less familiar with the Polaroids that thepop artist Andy Warhol used as a reference.

The candid photos of some of the world's most famous starshave been the subject of a new exhibition. The portraits, taken by Warhol during the years 70s and 80s, including stars from the worlds of music, film and sports, from Mick Jagger, LizaMinnelli and John Lennon to Arnold Schwarzenegger, JerryHall and Muhammad Ali.

The artist even presents itself, even using some strange disguises. One shows him wearing sunglasses and what hecalls a "fright wig". In another sits stone-faced with curly wigwith full makeup, including bright red lips.

Así es parlantes por neveras, como es de conocimiento el fabricante de parlantes pionera de estos productos y por la calidad de sus acabados o por su simple dominio del mercado, hace de “estándar” de ese objeto. Así cuando imaginamos a una estrella del rock desgañitándose en el escenario y rascando la guitarra seguramente la visualizareis con unos grandes altavoces y amplificadores Marshall a sus espaldas. 


 Imagínese los Rolling Stones tienen una de estas repleta de zumos de frutas hipervitamínicos en sus cocinas (o quizá guarden ahí algo de alcohol o las bolsas de sangre para sus transfusiones diarias), y así mientras Mick Jagger se prepara un sándwich saca el embutido del refrigerador cantando el “Satisfaction” por encontrarse casi como en el escenario… o quizá será por que está contento al ver que todavía le queda chorizo ibérico para el bocata.

A esta neverita Marshall no le falta detalle, como los botones y comandos de la parte superior, y en tus fiestas con los amigotes podrás cantar los gratest hits borrachines (ya sabéis, cada uno tiene los suyos) mientras te encaramas a este pseudo-amplificador cual estrella del Rock dirigiéndose a las masas de fans. Si al tirarte sobre la multitud esta se aparta y te lastimas un poco, siempre podrás abrir la nevera y aplicarte algo frío sobre el golpe para reducir la inflamación.

Marshall espera comenzar a servir los pedidos a partir del mes de Octubre (cuando el calorcito ya habrá pasado, todo hay que decirlo) y aunque todavía faltan más de 6 meses ya podéis apuntaros a la lista de pre-reservas si os interes. Jimmy White: 


The youngest ever World Amateur Snooker champion, aged 18, White (right in picture) went on to win 23 further titles – but lost all six of his world championship finals. He lives in Surrey with his wife.


Ronnie's daughter went to the same school as mine and one Christmas, in 1988, our kids were in a play together. We were in the audience and he looked over at me and smiled as we were both having trouble with our camcorders. We had a brief chat – I'm a huge Rolling Stones fan – but I didn't for the life of me think he liked snooker. It turned out he loved it; Ronnie has a table backstage at every gig, so he and [Stones guitarist] Keith [Richards] can relax before they go on.


We arranged to meet the morning after the play, in a pub in Wimbledon. We were supposed to do our Christmas shopping afterwards but one thing led to another and we didn't make it: our wives weren't too happy with us, but I was delighted.


We hang out well together: we always have a laugh round each other's houses, playing snooker for hours on end, and Ronnie playing me some of his songs.


One night me and [snooker champion] Ronnie O'Sullivan went over and Keith was there too, and they were playing new stuff on their guitars. We watched them play all night, until they turned round to us in the early morning and said, "So, who do you think is best?" Then they watched me and O'Sullivan play snooker all the following day.


We both have a passion for horse-racing and often go to the races together. Some years ago I was supposed to present a trophy in Leicester for an afternoon race; the night before I was at Ronnie's house in Wimbledon, having some fun. I said, "Ronnie I've got to go now as I'm due to present this trophy tomorrow." And he said, "Don't worry Jimmy, you'll make it!" Then, lo and behold, I woke up the next day, late, still in Wimbledon, panicking as I had to present this trophy soon. But Ronnie just said, "Don't worry, I've got a friend with a helicopter." We got there with three minutes to spare.


Though we've both had troubles, our relationship has had no downs; he's one of my best friends. He's been incredibly generous over the years: my house is filled with his art, portraits of Marvin Gaye, Eric Clapton, each signed: "To Jimmy, get this framed, you so and so."




Ronnie Wood: 


.I'd found out that his daughter Lauren and my daughter Leah were at the same school but I didn't think anything of it until we bumped into each other at their Christmas play in 1988.


At the time I was following Jimmy closely on the box and he was somebody I'd always wanted to meet. We went out for a drink the following morning and then three days later we finally got home. As the days went by he said, "Don't worry, Ronnie, the kids don't expect you back till Christmas morning." I was like, "I should have been home by now Jimmy, but I'm having too much fun!"


We used to do those [drinking sessions] all the time. His ex would often drag him out of my studio the next morning by his hair across my lawn, then home. And he's like, "What's for breakfast, love?"


All that snooker gang Jimmy was part of were like rock'n'rollers. Back in the days when we were both using [drugs] he'd turn up to one of my gigs for a second then disappear for the rest of the evening.


Through the years he's given me cues and balls and one of the most important possessions in my life, my Thurston table. I always say that Jimmy was the greatest player never to have won a world championship. It's important for a snooker player to have top focus – it's much the same for a musician – and just one lapse of concentration for two seconds is all it takes to lose.

Para Gererd Mankowitz (Londres-Reino Unido, 1946) ha posado todo el santoral del rock y el pop de las últimas cuatro décadas y media. El fotógrafo, el más veterano de los retratistas musicales de su país, ha retratado a todas las grandes estrellas británicas desde la década de los años sesenta del siglo XX.

Con casi una veintena de sus fotos en la colección permanente de la National Portrait Gallery de Londres, una de las fototecas más prestigiosas del mundo, es difícil entender por qué la obra de Mankowitz nunca había sido expuesta retrospectivamente. Quizá la explicación resida en que nunca se ha preocupado por el carácter artístico de su obra y siempre ha sido un fotógrafo profesional trabajando al amparo de los encargos comerciales de las casas discográficas o los propios músicos.

La falta de una gran antología cronológica quedará reparada ahora con la exposición Gered Mankowitz: a retrospective (Gered Mankowitz: una retrospectiva) que acaban de anunciar las Snap Galleries de la capital británica. La muestra estará en cartel entre el 28 de abril y el 16 de junio.

Incansable y humilde

Ante la cámara de este incansable y humilde fotógrafo de estrellas han posado la práctica totalidad de las primeras figuras de la músico del Reino Unido -con alguna excepción, como Jimi Hendrix, que si bien nació en EE UU, alcanzó notoriedad mundial a partir de sus primeras actuaciones en Londres-: desde los artistas de los años sesenta (los Rolling Stones, Donovan, los Yardbirds, Spencer Davis Group, Small Faces...) y los sucesores de los pioneros (Soft Machine, Free, Traffic, The Nice, Joe Cocker, Slade...), hasta formaciones y solistas de los ochenta y noventa (Sparks, The Jam, Magazine, Robert Palmer, Kate Bush, Oasis...).

Es mi primera retrospectiva y valía la pena volver al cuarto oscuro y a los orígenes En la exposición podrán verse un centenar de piezas, todas ellas copias realizadas manualmente en el cuarto oscuro a partir de los negativos originales. "Es mi primera retrospectiva y valía la pena el esfuerzo de volver al cuarto oscuro y a los orígenes. Todas las fotos son en blanco y negro y han sido reveladas y positivadas siguiendo las técnicas tradicionales, sin intervención digital, para que los detalles originales estén al alcance de los espectadores", explica el artista.

Mankowitz abandonó la escolaridad a los 15 años e intentó buscar un futuro laboral. En un viaje a Holanda le dejaron una cámara y se percató de que tenía buen ojo y habilidades innatas para la fotografía. Aprendió los rudimentos del oficio como aprendiz en la agencia Camera Press. En 1963 abrió su primer estudio en Londres, al lado de la mítica galería Indica, en parte financiada por los Beatles (fue el lugar donde se conocieron John Lennon y Yoko Ono).

En cuestión de meses, Mankowitz era un habitual en los círculos del pop y el rock londinense. Tras una sesión de retratos a Marianne Faithful, la novia de Mick Jagger, se convirtió, con 18 años, en fotógrafo oficial de los Rolling Stones, para los que hizo las cubiertas de los álbumes Out of our Heads (1965) y Between the Buttons (1967).

En 1967  hizo dos sesiones a Jimi Hendrix y su grupo, The Experience. Las imágenes se convirtieron en las más conocidas del guitarrista en un estudio. 

En 2009 Mankowitz fue uno los jurados del Sony World Photography Awards, compartiendo labores con Mary Ellen Mark, Bruce Davidson y Sarah Moon.

The Rolling Stones, Gered Mankowitz first retrospective of the photographer's oldest English rock
To Gererd Mankowitz (London-UK, 1946) has posed all saints rock and pop of the past four and a half decades. The photographer, the oldest of musical portrait of his country, has portrayed all the major British stars from the decade of the sixties of the twentieth century.
With nearly two dozen of his photos in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London, one of the world's most prestigious photo libraries, it is difficult to understand why the work had never been exposed Mankowitz retrospectively. Perhaps the explanation lies in that has never been concerned about the artistic nature of his work and always has been a professional photographer working under the orders of business of record companies or musicians themselves.

Mankowitz left school at 15 and tried to find a future career.On a trip to Holland left a camera and realized he had a good eye and innate abilities for photography. He learned the rudiments of the trade as an apprentice at the agency Camera Press. In 1963 he opened his first studio in London, next to the legendary Indica gallery, partly funded by the Beatles (it was the place where they met John Lennon and Yoko Ono).

Within months, Mankowitz was a regular in the circles of pop and rock London. Following a portrait session with Marianne Faithful, Mick Jagger's girlfriend, became, at 18 years, official photographer of the Rolling Stones, for whom he made the covers of the album Out of Our Heads (1965) and Between the Buttons (1967).In 1967 he made two sessions Jimi Hendrix and his band, The Experience. The images became the most famous guitarist in a study.
In 2009 Mankowitz was among the jurors of the Sony World Photography Awards, sharing duties with Mary Ellen Mark, Bruce Davidson and Sarah Moon
