Es desde hace décadas una sombra entre la niebla de Nova Scotia, en el Canadá más norteño. En noviembre cumplió 87 años. Vive como un ermitaño en una antigua cabaña de pescadores. Reaparece por impulsos. Tiene un genio cambiante.
Puede ser calificado como el mejor fotógrafo de la historia porque incluso cuando dejó de hacer fotos (porque le cansaban y nada le decían, porque renegó de ellas) siguió siendo el mejor.
Hoy le dedicamos la sección a Robert Frank (Suiza, 1924), cuya larga sombra, que se proyecta sobre toda la fotografía de los últimos sesenta años, es notable incluso en la ausencia.
El arte de Frank, como él mismo predicó, es objeto simple, fácil y teorizable. No se puede decir lo mismo de la persona y su reacción, porque la vida, como la fotografía, es una respuesta contra uno mismo.
1. Nace en una familia judía de buena posición económica que lo había perdido todo durante el nazismo y la II Guerra Mundial.
2. Se foguea como aprendiz de fotografía en Suiza. Autoedita su primer libro, 40 Fotos, en 1946. Es un portfolio para intentar venderse como fotógrafo. El estilo, demasiado ecléctico: contiene incluso fotos de otros autores retocadas por Frank. Fue reeditado hace unos años.
3. Viaja por Europa, pero en el continente desolado por la guerra no encuentra receptividad. En febrero de 1947 embarca en Holanda hacia los EE UU (“me voy a América, ¿cómo puede ser uno suizo?”, escribe). Sobrevive en Nueva York hasta que encuentra trabajo como colaborador habitual de la revista Harper’s Bazaar, donde hace bodegones de bolsos, zapaatos y otros accesorios de moda como protegido del gran Alexey Brodovitch, que dió cancha un puñado de los mejores fotógrafos de la segunda mitad del siglo XX (Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, Lisette Model…).
4. Brodovitch le convence para que abandone la poco ágil Rolleiflex bifocal de medio formato y se pase a la Leica III de 135 milímetros, que permite hacer fotos con una sola mano. Esta decisión cambiará la historia de la fotografía.
5. En 1948 comienza el nomadismo de Frank. Entre junio y diciembre recorre Brasil, Cuba, Panamá y, sobre todo, Perú. Autoedita dos cuadernos de espiral con las fotos. El libro Peru, publicado años más tarde, es su primera obra maestra y predice lo que vendrá.
6. Cruza el Atlántico varias veces. Traba amistad con otros buscadores de verdad (Elliott Erwitt y Bill Brandt) y viaja a Francia, Italia, Reino Unido y España. Entre marzo y agosto de 1952 vive con su mujer, la pintora Mary Lockspeiser, y el primer hijo de la pareja, Pablo, en El Grao (Valencia). Hace fotos sobre corridas de toros. Se hospedan en el hotel El Sol y, como no tienen dinero, pagan al propietario con fotos que hace Frank y que nunca han sido localizadas.
7. En el casi inencontrable catálogo Sobre Valencia, 1950, el parco Frank -muy poco amigo de teorizar- incluye una de sus más detalladas declaraciones de principios: “Blanco y negro son los colores de la fotografía. Para mí simbolizan las alternativas de esperanza y desesperación a las que la humanidad está eternamente sujeta. La mayoría de mis fotografías son de gente, vista de un modo muy simple, como a través de los ojos del hombre de la calle. Eso es algo que la fotografía debe contener: la humanidad del momento. Esa clase de fotografía es realismo. Pero el realismo no es suficiente: ha de estar lleno de visión, y las dos cosas juntas pueden hacer una buena fotografía. Es difícil describir esa tenue línea donde acaba el tema y empieza la propia mente”.
8. En 1954, con el padrinazgo de Walker Evans, fundador del moderno fotoperiodismo, Frank solicita una beca de la fundación Guggenheim. En la memoria indica que desea fotografiar en profundidad, en ciudades y pueblos de los EE UU, el rostro de una “nación cambiante”. Le dan 3.600 dólares (que amplirán en una cantidad similar dos años más tarde). Frank compra un Ford de segunda mano y se embarca en un recorrido de decenas de miles de kilómetros a través de 48 estados del país, que atraviesa de este a oeste, de norte a sur, de oeste a este y en varias direcciones erráticas más. Armado con su fiel Leica dispara 767 rollos de película (unas 27.000 fotos) durante dos años y medio. El resultado será con los años el libro de fotografía más importante de la historia, Los americanos.
9. Proteico y metafórico, real y humano, el foto-ensayo habla de política, religión, pobreza, racismo, riqueza, alienación, redención, música, juventud, medios de comunicación, nacimiento, muerte… Pese a todo, es autobiográfico: la mirada de Frank, que fue detenido varias veces por la policía, expulsado de pueblos y amenazado, está en cada foto. “Trabajo todo el tiempo, hablo poco, trato de no ser visto”, escribe en su diario. En algunas etapas embarca a su esposa y sus dos hijos (Andrea, la segunda, había nacido en 1954) en un viaje que parece comenzar eternamente y no tener fin. Duermen en el coche o en moteles baratos, se mueven por impulsos, entran en tiendas y bares, conviven con las paradojas y registran las grandezas. Nunca nadie, ni antes ni después, se tomó tan en serio un recorrido anatómico-fotográfico para diseccionar un país con ternura pero sin piedad.
10. Los americanos -83 imágenes seleccionadas por Frank tras un meticuloso y agotador proceso- provoca miedo. Es un espejo demasiado exacto. Las editoriales califican el libro de “perverso”, “siniestro” y “antiamericano” y ninguna se atreve a publicarlo. En 1958 Frank logra editarlo en Francia. La introducción la escribe Jack Kerouac: “Después de ver estas imágenes, terminas por no saber si un jukebox es más triste que un ataúd (…) Robert Frank, suizo, discreto, amable, con esa pequeña cámara, que levanta y dispara con una mano, se tragó un triste poema desde la misma América y lo pasó a fotografía, haciéndose un sitio entre los grandes poetas trágicos del mundo”, dice. En 1959, cuando el libro aparece en los EE UU, ofende a los críticos. La revista Popular Photography publica siete reseñas en un mismo número. Todas son malas menos una, que destaca el uso del contraste.
11. “Una decisión: meto la Leica en el armario. Basta de espiar, de cazar, de atrapar a veces la esencia de lo que es negro, de lo que es blanco, de saber dónde se encuentra el Buen Dios”, escribe Frank en 1960. Había empezado a tantear con el cine el año anterior, con Pull My Daisy, inspirada en un texto de Kerouac.
12. Desde entonces se dedica a destruir lo descriptivo para ahondar en su propio estado de ánimo. Ha vuelto a hacer fotos con película Polaroid o cámaras desechables, pero las interviene, superpone, raya, dibuja y escribe sobre ellas. De vez en cuando acepta encargos extraños, como fotografiar un catálogo de camisas, una convención política o la contraportada para un disco de Tom Waits, pero se muestra esquivo y prefiere pasar el tiempo grabando vídeos en los alrededores de su cabaña de pescador.
13. Andrea, la hija, murió en 1974 en un accidente de avión en Guatemala; Pablo, el primogénito, padeció esquizofrenia y murió en 1994 en un centro siquiátrico. Frank vive desde 1970 con su segunda esposa, la artista June Leaf.
14. En 1972 hizo las fotos de la portada y las cubiertas interiores del mejor disco de los Rolling Stones, Exile on Main St. Siguió al grupo en la gira de ese mismo año por los EE UU y filmó el documental Cocksucker Blues (El blues de la felación), que fue estrenado en 1975 y proyectado una docena de veces antes de que Mick Jagger y Keith Richard prohibiesen la exhibición por la imagen de brutal amoralidad que se desprende del film. In 1959, when the book appears in the U.S., critics offended. Popular Photography magazine publishes seven reviews in the same number. All bad but one that emphasizes the use of contrast.
