Gram Parsons conocía el country como yo conozco el blues: cada matiz, cada tema realmente bueno. Y sabía cómo expresar todas esas influencias componiendo y cantando. Era un hombre honesto e inteligente, el tipo de tío con el que me gusta juntarme. Además, le encantaba colocarse. Por aquella época, eso era un plus.
Conocí a Gram en 1968, cuando vino con The Byrds a Londres. Al grupo ya lo había oído, pero al verlos con Gram comprendí que habían dado un cambio radical. Fui a saludarle al backstage y nos caímos bien. Más tarde, los Byrds pasaron por Londres de camino a Suráfrica. Le dije: “Tío, no vayas ahí”. Estaban en vigor las sanciones y el embargo. Así que dejó el grupo, así, sin más. Como no tenía dónde ir, se vino a vivir conmigo.
Como compositor, Gram tiene una forma de trabajar muy parecida a la mía: fijar un par de acordes, experimentar y ver hasta dónde puede llegar. En vez de sentarse con un lápiz y un papel intentando hacer encajar las cosas, te sientas delante del micrófono y la música te viene sola. A Gram le gustaba hacerlo así, pero luego trabajaba muy duro (más duro que nadie a quien conozca) en las grabaciones.
Creo que murió justo cuando empezaba a encontrar su lugar. Su producción es mínima, pero su influencia sobre la música country es enorme. Por eso estamos hablando aquí de él. Lo que nunca sabremos es qué podría haber llegado a hacer. Era todo lo que podía desearse de un cantautor. Era divertido estar con él y maravilloso a la hora de tocar.
